Spartans Battle Back for Draw
Two late goals give TWU a 2-2 tie with UBC

VANCOUVER, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team scored twice in the final five minutes to earn a 2-2 draw with the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Wednesday night at UBC's Point Grey campus.

"We made a few mistakes early, but it was a really gutsy effort by our guys to come back and tie the match," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson.

Early into injury time Spartans' forward Todd Anderson (1st yr, Langley, BC) complete the amazing comeback as he broke through a number of T-Bird defenders and hammered the ball into the lower corner of the UBC net to tie the match at 2-2.

Four minutes earlier TWU's Drew Roddy (5th yr, forward, Orono, MN) gave the Spartans hope as he picked up a loose ball after a TWU corner kick. Roddy made solid contact and sent it into the bottom left corner of the UBC net to put the Spartans on the scoreboard trailing 2-1.

UBC opened the scoring in the 22nd minute, when TWU keeper Chris Cecil (5th yr, Abbotsford, BC) miss hit the ball and sent it directly to UBC’s Steve DeBlasio. DeBlasio then took the ball and sent it into the bottom right corner of the TWU net.

Less than a minute later UBC forward Dave Wong made the score 2-0 when he stole the ball and then sent the ball over top of a charging Cecil and into the back of the Spartan net.

Next up for the Spartans is their Canada West home opener against the University of Victoria Vikes. Match time on Friday, September 16 is set for 7:15 pm.
