Spartans Tie Vikes

21 Spartan shots not enough as TWU ties Victoria 1-1

LANGLEY, British Columbia
- The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team (0-0-2) controlled most of the play in Friday night’s match with the visiting University of Victoria Vikes (0-0-1). But outshooting the visitors from Vancouver Island 21-3 was not enough as the two squads tied 1-1 in Canada West conference play.

"I was very pleased with the number of scoring opportunities that we were able to generate," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "We were unlucky not to come away with more goals."

The defending CIS National Champion Vikes got a scoring opportunity in the second minute of play when a Victoria forward was taken down in the box by a Spartan defender. As a result the Vikes were  awarded the penalty kick. Victoria midfielder William Moore made no mistake as he put his team up 1-0.

The Spartans did not hang their heads. The came charging back and in the eighth minute TWU defender Paul Ballard (5th yr, Port Coquitlam, BC) got his head on a ball deflected by Victoria keeper Adam Guy (Inglewood, ON) and sent the ball into the back of the Vikes net to tie the match at 1-1.

TWU dominated the play for the remainder of the match, but their shots failed to find the mark and Victoria defenders were able to control the Spartans play in the box.

TWU rookie forward Todd Anderson (Langley, BC) came close to giving the Spartans the lead in the 35th minute. Anderson broke open at the top of the box and banged a ball hard off the right Victoria goal post.

Jacob Hanson (5th yr, keeper, Powell River, BC) played the full 90 minutes in net for the Spartans, while Adam Guy played the full 90 minutes for the Vikes.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Saskatchewan on Thursday, September 22, 05. Match time at TWU is set for 7:15 pm.
