TWU Gets the Win
Spartans bombard Huskies with 37 shots
LANGLEY, British Columbia - School records of 37 shots and 22 shots on net were too much for the visiting University of Saskatchewan to handle Thursday night at TWU. The Spartans bombarded the Huskies to earn a 4-1 victory as shell shocked Huskie keepers Dan Schick (Saskatoon, SK) and Derrick Ng (Saskatoon, SK) turned away 18 Spartan shots.
"The good thing about today is that we were playing under similar circumstances as the Vikes match, but tonight we moved the ball better and more efficiently, which is a huge improvement over the Victoria match," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "Today we were able to break them down and created better scoring opportunities."
Paul Ballard (5th yr, Port Coquitlam, BC) led the way for the Spartans with two first half goals, which were scored on nearly identical corner kicks.
The first goal in the seventh minute came off of a corner kick from midfielder Nick Perugini (3rd yr, Montreal, PQ). Perugini curled the ball into the centre of the box, where Ballard went high into the air and knocked it into the top right side of the Huskie net.
Drew Roddy (5th yr, forward, Minneapolis, MN) made it 2-0 in the 16th minute, when he finished off a build up by slotting the ball into the left side of the Saskatchewan net. Roddy's goal came after the Spartans worked the ball around the field until TWU forward Mark Peters played the ball across the box to an open Roddy.
Ballard's second goal came in the 23rd minute. This time it was teammate Todd Anderson who knocked the corner kick into the centre of the Saskatchewan box. Once again Ballard went high and headed the ball into the left corner of the Huskies' net.
Todd Anderson (1st yr, forward, Langley, BC) made the score 4-0 in the 30th minute when he took a through ball and hammered the ball into the back of the Huskies.
Saskatchewan got their lone goal early in the second half. Huskie forward Steve Krieg (Saskatoon, SK) got his foot on the ball at the top of the box and sent it towards the Spartan net. TWU keeper Chris Cecil (5th yr, Abbotsford, BC) was moving to stop the shot, but as the ball was moving towards the TWU keeper it was deflected by a Spartan defender and sent into the bottom left corner of the TWU net.
Next up for the Spartans is the University of Alberta on Saturday, September 24. Match time at TWU is scheduled for 3:15 pm. The Huskies have a day off before they take on the UBC Thunderbirds Saturday afternoon at UBC.
Match Notes: the previous TWU record for shots in a game was 34, which was set against Western Baptist College on August 31, 2002...the previous TWU shots record against a CIS school was 26, which was set against the University of Lethbridge on October 23, 2003...Saskatchewan keeper Dan Schick had to leave the match in the 72nd minute after sustaining a leg injury...
