Spartans and Golden Bears All Even
TWU and Alberta battle it out on the pitch
Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team had a number of quality chances in the first half, but they were only able to take a 1-0 lead into the break. The missed opportunities would prove costly as the visiting University of Alberta scored on a free kick midway though the second half to earn the 1-1 draw Saturday afternoon at TWU.
"We carried the play in the first half, we just were not able to take advantage of the opportunities that we created," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "Then we came out flat in the second half, which cost us the two points."
The Spartans' goal came at the six minute mark of the first half. TWU forward Mark Peters (5th yr, Chilliwack, BC) broke down the left side of the field and sent a high cross to the near post of the Golden Bear net, where teammate Drew Roddy (5th yr, forward, Minneapolis, MN) split the Alberta defenders and headed the ball into the top left corner of the net.
The Spartans continued to press the Golden Bears for the remainder of the half, but a 10-5 shot advantage was not enough for them to get the insurance goal.
The Golden Bears had a stronger second half as they held a 6-4 shot advantage over the Spartans.
Alberta got the break that they needed in the 63rd minute, when TWU committed a foul just outside the top of the Spartan box. Alberta's Mark Korthuis (Saskatoon, SK) took the free kick and curled it around the five-man Spartan wall and into the top left corner of the TWU net.
TWU's Chris Cecil (5th yr, Abbotsford, BC) played the full 90 minutes for the Spartans, while Alberta's Daniel Gusberti (Edmonton, AB) and Devon Fraser (Winnipeg, MB) split the duties for the Golden Bears.
The tie keeps the #7 ranked Spartans undefeated in Canada West with a record of 1-0-3 and moves the Golden Bears to 2-2-1.
Next up for the Spartans is against the New Zealand junior national team on Tuesday, September 27. The match will be played in Kelowna at the Apple Bowl. Next home game for TWU is against Simon Fraser University on Wednesday, September 28. Match time is scheduled for 7 pm.
Next up for Alberta is tomorrow afternoon against the University of British Columbia. Match time at UBC is set for 2:15 pm.
Match Notes: TWU held a 14-11 edge in shots...Alberta keepers made six saves, while TWU's Cecil made one...
