Spartans Tie Kiwi's
TWU ties New Zealand National U19 Team 1-1

KELOWNA, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University tied the New Zealand National U19 team 1-1 Tuesday night at the Apple Bowl in Kelowna, BC.

"Tonight was another great opportunity for TWU men’s soccer to play a national team program," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "We are very excited about our relationship with the Canadian Soccer Association and the opportunity for more of these matches in the future."

New Zealand opened the scoring in the 30th minute off of a set piece from just outside the 18 yard box.

Trailing 1-0 at the half TWU came out flying in the second and put the Kiwi’s under constant pressure.

After a number of quality chances the Spartans were able to tie the match in the 84th minute. TWU’s Jason Flint (Abbotsford, BC) jumped on a loose ball in the box and knocked the ball into the bottom left corner of the New Zealand net. "It was unbelievable on how long it took us to put one in the back of the net," said Alderson.

TWU keepers Chris Cecil (Abbotsford, BC) and Jacob Hanson (Powell River, BC) split the goal keeping duties for the Spartans.

TWU out shot the visitors 24-10 and held a 14-4 edge in corner kicks.

Next up for the Spartans is the SFU Clan on Wednesday, September 28. Match Time at TWU is set for 7 pm.
