Another Draw for the Spartans
TWU and the SFU Clan battled to a 1-1 tie
LANGLEY, British Columbia - Under wet and soggy conditions the seventh ranked (CIS) Trinity Western University men’s soccer team and the sixth ranked (NAIA) Simon Fraser University Clan battled to a 1-1 draw Wednesday night at Trinity Western University.
The Spartans, who less than 24 hours earlier had tied the New Zealand U19 National Team 1-1 in Kelowna, BC, showed sign's of the long overnight road trip from the Okanagan as the Clan held the edge in play out-shooting the Spartans 14-6.
"This is probably the first tie that we have had this year that I have actually been okay with," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "Even though the boy’s had very little sleep, we moved the ball really well. They played with lots of heart and we went deep into our bench, so a 1-1 result is okay."
Midfielder Justin Cordick (3rd yr, Anmore, BC) gave TWU a 1-0 lead on a goal in the 38th minute after the SFU was assessed a foul just outside their penalty area.
Teammate Nick Perugini (3rd yr, midfield, Montreal, PQ) set Cordick up when he rolled the ball outside the line of the SFU wall. Cordick was then able to rifle a shot into the top right corner of the Clan net.
Trailing 1-0 after 45 minutes, SFU came out strong in the second half. Their efforts were rewarded in the 60th minute when SFU’s All-American forward Andrew Corazza (Coquitlam, BC) scored his 15th goal of the season.
Corazza, who is currently the NAIA player of the week, was sent in alone on the Spartan defenders by a through ball from teammate Leigh Sembaluk (Regina, SK). Corazza took the pass split the Spartan defenders and went in alone on TWU keeper Chris Cecil (5th yr, Abbotsford, BC). The Clan's all-time leading scorer then made a nice move and slid the ball under a charging Cecil and into the bottom left side of the TWU net.
TWU keepers Jacob Hanson (5th yr, Powell River, BC) and Chris Cecil split the goaltending duties for the Spartans, while Thomas Lindley (Seabright, NS) went the distance for the Clan.
The Spartans (4-1-6) will now travel to Alberta to play at the University of Lethbridge on Saturday, October 1 and at Calgary on Sunday, October 2, while the Clan will head to Seattle, WA to play at Seattle Pacific on Saturday, October 1.
Match notes: SFU held the edge in corner’s 6-0...while TWU held the edge in saves 5-1...SFU held a 6-5 edge in shots in the first half and an 8-1 edge in the second half...
