Farenik hits PK to give TWU 2-1 victory

CALGARY, Alberta - The seventh ranked Trinity Western University men’s soccer team had to go deep into their bench to earn a 2-1 victory over the fourth ranked University of Calgary Sunday afternoon in Calgary. The win keeps the Spartans undefeated at 3-0-3 in Canada West and moves them into second spot behind the number one ranked University of British Columbia, while the loss drops the Dinos to fourth in the Canada West with a 3-2 record and two games in hand on third place Alberta.

"It was an admirable performance by our guys, we were missing seven guys who would normally start for us and we are very proud of the way the rest of our guys stepped up today," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson.

In the first half, with the rain and hail coming down, the Spartans got on the board first when midfielder Chris Trauter's (2nd yr, Langley, BC) well-placed shot from the top of the box caught Calgary's Rick Urbanczyk out of position in the 22nd minute.

Moments later, Calgary's Adam MacDonald hauled down a TWU's Jason Flint (3rd yr, midfield, Abbotsford, BC) in the box to give the Spartans a penalty kick. Calgary native Justin Farnik (1st yr, defender) made no mistake from the spot giving the Spartans a 2-0 lead in the 26th minutes.

In the second half, with the weather clearing up considerably, the Dinos came at TWU in waves and in the 65th minute Tanmeet Singh scored from inside the box after a pass from Mazin Tabsh.

Calgary continued to press with Singh coming close again ten minutes later and with a Ryan Holbrook header glancing just wide, but TWU's Chril Cecil (5th yr, Abbotsford, BC) kept his resolve and made a couple of key saves down the stretch.

TWU’s Cecil made three saves to earn the victory, while Calgary's Rick Urbanczyk made seven saves in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Victoria on Friday, October 7. Match time on the Island is scheduled for 7:45 pm.

Match notes: Calgary out shot the Spartans 19-11...TWU had the edge in corners 5-3...the last time the Spartans played the Dinos in Calgary they lost in 2-1 in the  2004 Canada West semi-finals...
