IMMEDIATE RELEASE
Spartans Suffer First Loss
TWU falls to UVIC 2-1 for first conference loss of season
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The number three ranked Trinity Western University men’s soccer team (3-1-3) could not take advantages as they fell 2-1 to the unranked University of Victoria Vikes (2-4-1) Friday night at Victoria’s Centennial Stadium.
“Victoria scored when they got their chances, but we just could not finish our opportunities,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson.
The start of the game saw both sides creating chances at both ends. The Spartans took the early lead in the 17th minute from a corner taken by Mark Peters (5th year, Chilliwack, B.C.). Peters sent a short low ball into the box to Paul Ballard (5th year, Port Coquitlam, B.C.) who steered the ball into the net with his foot.
The Vikes hit back in the 22nd minute with a goal of their own after a free kick. From just on the Vikes side of centre Kyle Finner (4th year, Whitehorse, YK) sent the ball high and deep into the right side of the box to the waiting head of Peter Richmond (1st year, Victoria). Richmond won the ball in the air and headed it into the back of the net.
The UVic defenses came under immense pressure in the 25th minute. The Trinity Western attack peppered the goal many times in t his forward push. The Vikes defense managed to kick the ball off the goal line twice to prevent a Spartan score.
The Vikes scored again in the 39th minute from a Davin McLeod (2nd year, Saskatoon, Sask.) cross to Kyle Langseth (2nd year, Grayling, Michigan) in the box. Langseth used his foot to guide it into the back of the net behind Spartan keeper Jacob Hanson (5th year, Powell River, B.C.).
A superb save in injury time by UVic keeper Adam Guy (3rd year, Inlgewood, ON) kept the score at 2-1 at half-time.
The second half saw an even contest with chances being created at both ends of the field. The Spartans pressured the Vikes defense right up until the final whistle with a number of balls hitting the cross bar and the uprights, including one in injury time from the Trinity Western attack.
The Vikes defense held strong foiling all attempts made by the Spartan attack, keeping the game to a 2-1 scoreline.
Next up for the Spartans is hosting the number one ranked University of British Columbia on Thursday, October 13. Match time is set for 7:15 pm.
