Spartans and T-Birds Draw 1-1
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The eighth-ranked Trinity Western University Spartans and the number one ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds tied 1-1 in Canada West Conference action Thursday night at TWU’s Langley, BC campus. The draw represents the fourth in league play for TWU; the Spartans and T-Birds tied 2-2 at UBC to open this year's season.
"We are battling the fact that we have already made playoffs and because of this we have not yet shown the passion or desire of going out and taking it to a team. The good news is that we worked our way out of it, the bad news is that we came out way too slow," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "The final third of the field was not good today, which is partially a result of lack of passion. Because if you are coming out with fire you find a way to get to the net, if you haven’t decided that you need a win then you do not come out with passion and you do not finish your chances and get on the end of balls. Passion is what we have to find and hopefully we will find it before we get to playoffs."
The Thunderbirds came out flying to start tonight's match and their efforts were rewarded in the fourth minute of play. After a TWU foul, UBC was awarded the free kick deep in Spartan territory. The T-Birds' Ben DeCosse (North Vancouver, BC) took the kick and sent a beautiful cross into the Spartan box where defender Jonathon Poli (North Vancouver, BC) was waiting. Poli went high and was able to head the ball just inside the right post of the Spartan net.
UBC could have easily had a three or four goal lead by the 15 minute mark of the first half as the T-Birds were bombarding the Spartan net, which included a shot off of the post by defender Brian Reems (Nanaimo, BC).
The Spartans survived and regrouped and started to take the play to the visitors. TWU forward Drew Roddy (Minneapolis, MN) tied the match in the 21st minute when he took a cross from Mustafa Demirci (Turkey) and headed the ball into the far left corner of the UBC net.
The remainder of the half saw a couple chances by either squad, but none of the attempts found the back of the net as the two teams remained tied 1-1 at the end of the half.
The Spartans controlled much of the play in the second half as they outshot the Thunderbirds eight to two, but despite their efforts they were unable to get the go ahead goal.
The tie keeps UBC undefeated and in first place at 5-0-2, while the Spartans remain in second place at 3-1-4.
Next up for the Spartans is their prairie road trip. They play Saturday, October 22 at Alberta and Sunday, October 23 at Saskatchewan. Next up for the T-Birds is at defending CIS champion Victoria on Saturday, October 15.
Match Notes: Overall TWU has eight ties during the 2005-06 season (6-2-8)...Spartan keeper Chris Cecil (5th yr, Abbotsford, BC) and T-Bird keeper Srdjan Djekanovic (Vancouver, BC) played the full 90 minutes for their respective teams...TWU forward Justin Cordick (3rd yr, Anmore, BC) led all players with four shots...
