TWU gets ready for postseason with 2-0 win over Lethbridge

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University made it two wins in a row with their 2-0 win over the University of Lethbridge Thursday night at TWU’s Langley, BC campus.

The Spartans had a number of quality chances in the fist half, but were unable to capitalize as the two squads remained deadlocked at 0-0 after the first 45 minutes.

The two teams were still tied nine minutes into the second half, when TWU coach Al Alderson made a couple of substitutions, bringing in forward Josh McCaig (4th yr, Mission, BC) and midfielder Mustafa Demirci (2nd yr, Turkey).

The substitutions sparked the home team and in the 66th minute McCaig’s bullet shot deflected off a defender to give TWU a 1-0 lead.

With new life TWU kept pushing and in the 77th minute forward Drew Roddy (5th yr, Minneapolis, MN) made a spectacular header to put the Spartans up 2-0.

The Spartans will finish of the Canada West regular season Saturday afternoon against the University of Calgary. Match time against the Dinos is scheduled for 3:15 pm. The match will mark the final regular season matches for seniors Paul Ballard, Lee Ellis, Chris Cecil, Jacob Hanson, Josh Coleman, Drew Roddy, Mark Peters, Harpreet Sahota and Todd Dutka.

The following week, Nov. 4-5, the Spartans will play host to the Canada West playoffs. TWU will play a yet to be determined opponent on Friday at 6:00 pm. The other semi-final match will kick off at 3:30 pm. Current standings have UBC in first place with 20 points, TWU tied for second with Alberta at 19 points with Victoria in third with 16 points, followed closely by Calgary with 15 points.
