Spartans Finish League Play with Win
TWU tops Calgary 1-0 as they head into the Canada West Playoffs

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Todd Anderson’s goal in the 86th minute gave the Trinity Western University  men’s soccer team (6-2-4) a 1-0 victory over the University of Calgary (5-6) Saturday afternoon at TWU’s Spartan Field.

As hosts of this year’s Canada West play-offs the Spartans had known that they would be playing in the post season from the start of the year. TWU could have easily not given it their all during the regular season, but the Spartans have played hard and showed their depth as they have played through a number of injury’s to key players. As a result the Spartans have earned their spot in the post season and enter the 2005 playoffs on a three game winning steak.

“It was great to play that deep into our roster, get the win and see the guys play with a lot of enthusiasm,” said TWU head coach Al Alderson.

The two squads matched each other for much of the match, with Calgary holding an 18-15 edge in shots and TWU holding an 11-8 in shots on goal.

TWU forward Todd Anderson (Langley, BC) got the game winner in the 87th minute. Anderson got hold of a long pass up the middle and split the defenders to go in alone on Calgary keeper Brad McDonnell. McDonnell came charging out to cut down the angle, but Anderson was able to put the ball past to give TWU the 1-0 lead.

TWU’s Jacob Hanson (5th yr, Powell River, BC) made 11 saves to earn the win for the Spartans, while McDonnell made seven saves in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans are the Canada West playoffs. TWU will play their semi-final match Friday evening at TWU, against a yet to be determined opponent. TWU will kick off their match at 6:00 pm. The other semi-final will go at 3:30 pm.

Today’s match was the final regular season home match for TWU seniors; Paul Ballard, Lee Ellis, Chris Cecil, Jacob Hanson, Josh Coleman, Mark peters, Mike Barney, Harpreet Sahota and Todd Dutka.

Current Canada West standings have UBC in first with 23 points and one game remaining, TWU at 22 points with no games remaining, Alberta win third with 19 points and one match remaining, Victoria in fourth with 16 points and one match remaining and Calgary in fifth place with 15 points and one game remaining.
