TWU opens CIS national championship with 1-0 win over
CHARLOTTETOWN, Prince Edward Island - The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team earned a 1-0 win over the Université Laval Rogue et Or in their inaugural match at the CIS national championship in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island. Justin Farenik’s (1st yr, defender, Calgary, AB) goal in the sixth minute proved to be the difference for the Spartans.
“It was nice that with first game jitters that we were able to create a number of excellent of scoring chances, which was very exciting,” said TWU head coach Al Alderson. “On a day where we were not as sharp as we could be I was real glad that we could come out with a win.”
Farenik’s goal came off of a TWU free kick from just on the Laval side of centre field. TWU midfielder Nick Perugini (3rd yr, Montreal, PQ) struck the ball high towards the Laval net. Rogue et Or keeper Nabil Haned was unable to hold on to the ball and on the ensuing scramble Farenik was able to knock the ball into the lower right hand corner of the Rogue et Or net.
The Spartans controlled much of the play throughout the match, out shooting Laval 17-7 and forcing Laval keeper Nabil Haned (Alger, PQ) into making 11 saves to keep his team in the match.
TWU forward Todd Anderson (1st yr, Langley, BC) and midfielder Nick Perugini had a number of quality chances in the second half, but they were unable to get the insurance marker.
Laval’s Pierre-Henri Poudre looked like he had the tying goal with 13 minutes remaining, but his header from just outside the six yard box sailed high over the Spartans net.
TWU keeper Chris Cecil (5th yr, Abbotsford, BC) made two saves to earn the win for the Spartans.
TWU will now play the winner of the St. Mary’s University, University of Toronto match for a spot in Sunday’s national championship. Tomorrow’s semi-final match is scheduled for a 2 pm AST kick off.
