Alderson Named Coach of the Year
BC Soccer honours TWU head coach.

VANCOUVER –Trinity Western University’s men’s soccer coach Al Alderson was awarded the British Columbia Soccer Association's Senior Coach of the Year award for his efforts during 2005.

“I was very happy to receive this award from the BCSA on behalf of my players, coaching staff and our TWU Athletic Department,” said Alderson. “We always talk about TEAM goals and TEAM Awards...when any individual wins an award we describe it as a TEAM award.”

Steve Reed presented Alderson with the award at the association’s annual banquet on January 14, 06 at the Sheraton Wall Centre in Vancouver.

Al Alderson is Trinity Western University’s longest serving coach. In his 14th season as head coach of the Spartan men’s soccer, he has amassed a 122-85-49 overall record.

Alderson with ReedAlderson came to Trinity Western in the fall of 1985 and immediately fell in love with the school and dreamed what TWU Soccer could become. After graduating in 1988 with a Bachelor of Arts degree and three years of soccer under his belt, he went after the then-vacant coaching job. In only his second year of coaching Alderson won BCCAA Coach of the Year for his role in guiding the team to a best-ever overall record and a silver medal in the BCCAA Championships.

A big highlight in his career came last November when the Spartans won their first ever Canada West gold medal and brought home the bronze in a first ever berth at the Canadian University National Championships in Prince Edward Island.

“I have a great group of players, a fantastic coaching staff and an athletic department that gives us the opportunity to go after our goals and dreams,” commented Alderson. “We have loved the experience of growing from a relatively unknown program to becoming one of the top university soccer programs in Canada.”

Alderson is currently preparing his team for their spring season, which features matches against the Vancouver Whitecaps, Oregon State University, Gonzaga University, the University of Portland and the University of British Columbia.
