Whitecaps Outlast Spartans
Vancouver tops TWU 3-1 in third annual match

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team played host to the Vancouver Whitecaps in their third annual friendly Friday night at TWU’s Spartan Field Complex. The Spartans and the Whitecaps played a clean well paced match which saw the USL squad top the CIS Bronze medalists 3-1 on a cool clear evening.

The Whitecaps opened the scoring in the fifth minute when Jeff Clarke sent the ball into the lower left corner of the Spartans net. The goal came after the Whitecaps Joey Gjertsen was able to control the Vancouver corner kick and feed the ball to an open Clarke in the middle of the Box.

Steve Kendel made it 2-0 in the 25th minute when he broke open in the TWU penalty area. Kendel then slotted the ball into the lower right corner of the TWU net.

Trailing 2-0 at the half TWU came out strong in the second period. In the 57th minute the Spartans were able to take of a Whitecaps turnover in their own end. Josh McCaig found teammate Drew Roddy, who was able to get the ball past the Whitecaps Josh Wicks to make the score 2-1.

Spurred on by the goal the Spartans kept pressure on the Whitecaps back line as TWU out-shot Vancouver 6-3 in the second half. Despite their attempts the Spartans were unable to get the ball past the Whitecaps’ Srdjan Djekanovic, who had replaced Wicks in the 60th minute.

Vancouver got the insurance goal in the 89th minute when Matondo Sita-Taty got in alone off of a Vancouver counter attack. Sita-Taty chipped the ball overtop of a charging Jacob Hanson to make the final 3-1.

TWU’s Jacob Hanson played the entire 90 minutes for the Spartans.

Next up for the Spartans is at the Oregon State Beavers on Saturday, April 8th in Corvallis, Oregon.

Match Notes: Hanson made three saves for the Spartans, while Wicks made two saves and Djekanovic made three saves for the Whitecaps...Vancouver out shot TWU 9-8...the Whitecaps had the edge in corner kicks 7-2...
