SPARTANS SET NEW ATTENDANCE RECORD
-TWU nearly doubles previous mark

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team set a single game attendance record in their recent match with the Vancouver Whitecaps FC. The Spartans had well over 2,000 spectators watch their annual match with the Whitecaps. The 2,276 spectators eclipsed the previous TWU record of 1,150 which they set three years ago, April 3, 04 against the Whitecaps.

The CIS does not keep official attendance records, but the Spartans' record is believed to be one of the highest attendance marks for a competition by a CIS team in Canada. Previous marks include the capacity crowd of 3,500 that attended the 2002 CIS championship match at Carleton University between Brock University and Carlton and the 2,100 that watched the University of Victoria battle the Whitecaps in April 2005.

"Our coaching staff had set a dream goal of breaking 2,000 people at one of our games in the 2007-08 season and we are absolutely ecstatic that we exceeded our goal!! We are so thankful to many of our friends, supporters, co-workers, students and players who helped us in the endeavour and look forward to continuing to put stronger and stronger teams on the field while continuing to improve our already top-notch service and atmosphere at our home games. We are also thankful to the Vancouver Whitecaps for partnering with us for five years in a row. I can't wait to see what we can do next year," commented TWU head coach Al Alderson.

TWU has won three straight Canada West championships while earning CIS bronze in 2005, silver in 2006 and a fifth place finish this past season. In the 2007-08 season TWU earned their third Canada West league championship, having previously earned titles in 2004 and 2003. The Spartans entered Canada West in 2001.

Trinity Western University, in Langley, B.C. is an independent Christian liberal arts and sciences university enrolling approximately 4000 students. TWU offers undergraduate degrees in 40 major areas of study ranging from biotechnology, education, nursing, theatre and music, to psychology, communications and biblical studies. TWU's 16 graduate degree programs include counseling psychology, business, theology and leadership, and offers interdisciplinary studies in English, philosophy and history. TWU holds Canada Research Chairs in Biblical Studies, Biotechnology and Interpretation, Religion & Culture.

TWU is the proud hosts of the 2008 CIS women's soccer championship and the 2009 CIS men's soccer championship.
