SPARTANS WORK WITH UNION GOSPEL MISSION TO AID HOMELESS

VANCOUVER - On the weekend of December 1, several members of the Trinity Western University's men's soccer team teamed up with the Union Gospel Mission and other TWU students to serve a good cause. The students helped the Union Gospel Mission with social work on Vancouver's East Side, near East Hastings and Princess Ave, where most of Vancouver's homeless live.

Last year, a similar project was done with the Salvation Army where many clothes were given out.

This year - they did better, with over eight garbage bags of clothes being donated to the Gospel Mission or handed out to the homeless. The Spartans were split up into groups with other fellow TWU students and served hot chocolate and gave out clothes at various points on Hastings. Small snacks such as mandarin oranges were also given out.

Spartan forward Goran Vitic (2nd year, Surrey, BC) made some comments about the night, "It's always a surreal experience when you walk around these parts of the city. You always hear about homeless people in the media but you don't fully grasp the extent of their condition in relation to ours until you are directly interacting with them in their struggles. This is an experience that I wish to have again and would recommend to anyone."

The Spartans men's soccer team is planning to continue their service on Hastings after the Christmas break. In addition, the Spartans will participate in a ministry program at Willingdon Youth Detention Center during the spring.
