Patrick Kelly
Men's Soccer
Midfielder
5th Year
Business Student
TWU's Patrick Kelly has stepped up his play to start the 2008 season. The always-solid defender has been moved to the Spartans midfield this season and the dividends are already starting to show. The native of Cochrane, Alta. was instrumental in the Spartans' two wins this past weekend, 4-1 over Lethbridge (0-2-0) and 1-0 over Calgary (0-2-0).
Kelly has played well at both ends of the park. He was solid in the midfield marking his opponent and on the offensive end his runs through the opponents back line were constantly dangerous. The fifth-year Business student's efforts allowed him to set up two of the Spartans goals in their opening 4-1 win over Lethbridge as well as getting the game winner in TWU's 1-0 win over Calgary. "Patrick is playing some great soccer right now. His runs this weekend really put pressure on the other teams back line," said TWU head coach Al Alderson.
The wins put the No. 5-ranked Spartans at 2-0 on the season and in a tie for first place in Canada West play. TWU now hosts UBC (Sept. 11) and UVic (Sept. 13) in a pair of key West Coast matches.
