MEN’S SOCCER OPENS SEASON WITH A BATTLE OF THE BEST
LANGLEY, British Columbia - The men’s soccer team is ready to return to the pitch and there couldn’t be a more appropriate opponent for the Spartans to play in their opening game of the 2010-11 season as they'll get an immediate crack at redemption against UBC.
Last year, it was UBC who finished in first place in the Canada West – just three points ahead of the Spartans – and then it was UBC who beat TWU in the Canada West bronze medal game.
So when the Spartans looked at their schedule and saw a visit to Vancouver to open the season, they quickly realized their first kick of the ball in the fall would provide an opportunity to test themselves against a top club and make a statement about where they stand for the 2010-11 season.
After the Spartans first game against UBC, they’ll be at home for seven of their next nine games before closing out the season with four straight road matches.
When on the road, TWU will play all but one of their games (at UBC on September 10) starting at 2 p.m. while all seven of their home games start at 7 p.m.
The Spartans come into this season off a CIS bronze medal winning performance and with players like Jason Wiens (five goals last year), Ioannis Tsoulouhas (two goals and five assists) and both goalies Andrew Fink and Andrew Kowan returning to the fold, much is anticipated of this year's club.
