Sept. 28, 2011
OTTAWA (CIS) – Soccer players Josée Bélanger from the University of Sherbrooke and Andrew Fink from Trinity Western University are the Canadian Interuniversity Sport female and male athletes of the week for the period ending Sept. 25, 2011.
Bélanger, a fifth-year kinesiology student from Coaticook, Que., scored three goals in two games last weekend, including a pair of game-winners, to lead the Vert & Or to road victories over nationally eighth-ranked McGill and Concordia. In Friday’s 2-1 defeat of the Martlets, the four-time all-Canadian striker broke a 1-1 tie in the 63rd minute as Sherbrooke erased a 1-0 halftime deficit. In Sunday’s 3-1 win over the Stingers, she was named player of the match after she netted the game’s first two goals. Thanks to the perfect weekend, Sherbrooke (5-1) sits in second place in the Quebec standings, one point behind Montreal (5-0-1) and two in front of McGill (4-1-1).
UNB soccer player Samantha Lagacy, Trent rugby player Lauren Wisowski and UBC field hockey player Robyn Pendleton were also nominated for the women’s award.
Fink, a fourth-year business student from Burnaby, B.C., was unbeatable last weekend in front of the Spartans’ net as he led Trinity Western to back-to-back 1-0 shutouts on the road, against Alberta and Saskatchewan, which was ranked seventh in the country before the contest. The senior goalkeeper, who currently leads Canada West in goals against average (0.60) and shutouts (2), totaled nine saves in the two victories to up his season save percentage to 84.2. The Spartans (3-1-1) are in a three-way tie for second place in the conference standings, two points behind Calgary (4-2-0), with one game in hand.
