TWU Spartans (2) vs the George Fox University Bruins (1)
Spartans Take Tournament
Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team fell behind early in Saturday's match with the George Fox University Bruins, but responded with two goals by Paul Ballard (1st yr, defender, Port Coquitlam, BC) to seal the 2-1 victory and the Western Baptist Soccer Classic Tournament.
The victory gave the Spartans a 1-1-0 record in the tournament, which tied them with Western Baptist College for first place. The two teams were still tied after the first tiebreaker, goal differential, with both teams at plus 1. But the Spartans came out in front in the second tiebreaker goals against, with TWU minus 1 and WBC minus 7.
The Bruins made the most of their lone shot of the first half as they went up 1-0 when Bryan Erickson (4th yr, forward, Chehalis, WA) opened the scoring in the 31st minute off of a feed by Max Sorensen (2nd yr, midfielder, Bothell, WA).
The Spartans' thought they had tied it up late in the first half (40th minute). But for the second match in a row they had a goal called back, when Spartan midfielder Drew Roddy (1st yr, forward, Orono, MN), took a shot that went in the and out of the net but was disallowed by the official.
Down 1-0 at the end of the first half the Spartans came out strong in the second half and were rewarded with a goal by Paul Ballard in the 59th minute. The goal came when Mike Barney (1st yr, defender, Maple Ridge, BC) sent a thru ball to Mario Caravetta (3rd yr, midfield/defender, Abbotsford, BC) who then crossed the ball to Ballard who knocked the ball into the back of the net.
The Spartans took the lead for good on Ballard's second goal with less then 2 minutes to play in the match. On a TWU corner, Sean Crocker (2nd yr, midfielder, Abbotsford, BC) made a direct pass to Ballard who headed the ball towards the Bruins net. Ballard's shot went off of the post, but he quickly responded and headed the rebound past George Fox's keeper, Nathan Chamberlain.
"We were able to move Paul up to the central midfield position today and he responded with a fantastic game," said TWU head coach Al Alderson.
Due to NCAA regulations TWU's game with George Fox is considered exhibition matches.
Next up for the Spartans is at Williamette University on Monday, September 3. Game time is set for 2 PM in Salem, OR.
