TWU Spartans (0) vs the University of Saskatchewan Huskies (0)

Oh Soooo Close...

Langley, British Columbia - It looked like everything was falling into place for the Spartans' men's soccer team to squeak into the final playoff spot. Lethbridge had upset Calgary in the first game of their home and home and the Saskatchewan Huskies lost their day off because the Huskies' game in Victoria was fogged out Thursday and they had to play Friday. Unfortunately, the University of Calgary beat out Trinity Western University for the final playoff spot with their 6-0 win today over Lethbridge. The Calgary victory meant that today's match between the Spartans and the University of Saskatchewan Huskies did not have playoff implications and only meant that pride was on the line. TWU ended up settling for a 0-0 draw with the Huskies, but it was not for lack of trying.

The Spartans controlled the match for significant amounts of time. The good news was that they out shot the Huskies 18-9, but the bad news was that they only got 5 of the shots on goal. The game was somewhat of a microcosm of the Spartans season - a case of missed opportunities.

The Spartans have been in every game this season and have challenged and beaten championship caliber teams, but they have also had mental lapses and missed quality opportunities to make things happen. This can be partially attributed to the youth of the Trinity Western team. The silver lining in this season is that the Spartans will only get better.

In his final regular season Canada West game, Spartans keeper Shawn Ogden (5th yr, Powell River, BC) recorded the shutout.

The Spartans finish the season with a record of 3-6-3.
