Spartans Win Thriller

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team recorded its first regular season ‘W' in thrilling fashion with a 2-1 win at home Thursday night over the University of Victoria Vikes. The Spartans and Vikes managed to overcome the slippery conditions and occasional downpour to entertain the fans with multiple scoring opportunities and hard-nosed tackling.

"Tonight we were up against a very good opponent and we played with heart and passion," said TWU Head Coach Alan Alderson.

The Spartans pressured early, looking for the right opportunity to grab the advantage and were rewarded in the 23rd minute when one of Brian Scrivens' (5th yr, forward, Langley, BC) serves into the box was met by the leaping Josh McCaig (3rd yr, forward, Mission, BC), who headed a solid strike into the far right side of the goal. Victoria keeper Trevor Stiles (Victoria, BC) leaped across the goalmouth but was unable to get a hand on the shot.

Victoria had four shots in the first 45 minutes, but were unable to seriously threaten TWU's lead, and the half ended with the Spartans' lead at 1-0.

In the second half the Vikes pushed to get the equalizer, but the Spartans refused to back off, and both goalies were kept on their toes as the offenses kicked into high gear. Victoria upped the blood pressure of the Spartan Faithful in the 73rd minute when they found the back of the net for the equalizer. Vikes midfielder Will Moore (Victoria, BC) capitalized on a rebound in the box following a hard shot at point-blank range by a teammate and put the ball in the back of the net.

The already high intensity seemed to rise yet another notch as both coaches urged their teams to press for the win. Neither team wanted to walk away from this contest with a tie, but it was the home team that prevailed, scoring the tiebreaker in the dying minutes of the game. TWU midfielder Nick Perugini (2nd yr, Montreal, PQ) sent a curving ball into a crowd in the box off a set piece, and forward Jason Flint (2nd yr, Abbotsford, BC) was able to get his head on it to knock it past Stiles in the 84th minute.

Trinity Western improves to 1-1-0 while Victoria drops to 0-1-0. Next up for the Spartans is a friendly matchup with the alumni at 12 noon on Saturday, September 18, followed by an exhibition game versus the SFU Clan at 2:00pm. Victoria is now off to Vancouver for a match with the UBC Thunderbirds on Saturday.

Match Notes: tonight's match was fast and physical, with a total of 31 fouls whistled and four yellow cards handed out...TWU held the edge in shots (17-7) and corner kicks (8-2)...Victoria's Stiles and TWU's Chris Cecil (4th yr, Abbotsford, BC) each had four saves on the night...
