Spartans Hold off Clan
Langley, British Columbia - A late first half goal by TWU's Josh McCaig proved to be the difference as the Trinity Western University men's soccer team topped the Simon Fraser University Clan 1-0 Saturday afternoon at TWU's Spartan Field Complex.
"We were fortunate to get out of the first half with a lead," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "But we put it together in second half and finished strong."
Simon Fraser started strong and held the edge in play for a lot of the first half, holding the edge in shots 9-4. As the half wore on TWU started to get more of an edge in the play. Then in the 45th minute the Spartans were awarded a corner kick. TWU forward Brian Scrivens (5th yr, Langley, BC) bent the ball to the far side of the six, where Spartan forward Josh McCaig (3rd yr, Mission, BC) went high in the air to head the ball past SFU keeper Raegyn Hall (4th yr, Victoria, BC).
Simon Fraser's Andrew Corazza (3rd yr, forward, Coquitlam, BC) almost tied the match in the 74th minute, but his shot from the left side of the box was stopped by TWU keeper Jacob Hanson (4th yr, Powell River, BC).
Eight minutes later the Clan keeper Raegyn Hall made a spectacular diving save off of TWU's Nathan Square-Briggs (1st yr, midfield, Richmond, BC) in the 82nd minute to keep his squad in the match.
SFU's Aaron Beattie (4th yr, midfield, Port Moody, BC) and Andrew Corazza both had shot attempts from inside the TWU box late in the match, but their shots were blocked by the TWU defenders.
Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Alberta on Saturday, September 25 and at the University of Saskatchewan on Sunday, September 26. The Clan will now head to Arcata, CA to battle Grand Canyon University on Friday, September 24, 04.
Match Notes: SFU outshot TWU 17-8...TWU Jacob Hanson made seven saves to earn the shutout for the Spartans...the win moves TWU to 11-1-1, while the loss drops SFU to 5-2-0...Last season the two teams battled to a 1-1 draw, which coincidently was also in played in extremely wet conditions...This afternoon's win is the first for TWU over the Clan...SFU hold the series edge at 3-1-1...SFU is currently ranked 12th in the NAIA...
