Spartans Stay on Top

Langley, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team started slow, but finished strong to defeat the visiting University of Lethbridge 3-0 Saturday afternoon at TWU. The win keeps the 4-1-1 Spartans in a tie for first place with the University of British Columbia, while the loss drops Lethbridge to a 1-4-0 record and in sixth place in Canada West.

"I was pleased with the way the boys stayed focused on our job of getting three points," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "We could have easily gone away from our game plan, especially late in the match."

Even though TWU controlled the play early, outshooting Lethbridge 9-3, it took the #4 ranked Spartans until the 34th minute before they could find the back of the Pronghorn net.

The Spartans opened the scoring on a Jason Flint (Abbotsford, BC) header. TWU took control in the midfield and brought the ball up the right side. They played the ball into the midfield where Drew Roddy (Orono, MN) sent it wide to the right to Josh McCaig (Mission, BC). McCaig then chipped the ball into the box and towards the Lethbridge goal. As the ball neared the line Flint went up and headed the ball into the left side of the net.

TWU maintained control in the second half and notched their second goal in the 70th minute. The scoring play started when the Spartans played the ball high into the Pronghorn box. A Lethbridge defender cleared the ball out to the top of the penalty area. As the ball was coming down TWU midfielder Nick Perugini (Montreal, BC) onetimed the ball and hammered it towards the left hand side of the Pronghorn net. Just in front of the net the ball skipped along the ground then went off of a diving Marcel Galaszkiewicz (Calgary, AB) up off of the post, then up even higher to the center of the crossbar before ricocheting down into the Pronghorn net.

The final goal of the match came in the 88th minute on a Pronghorn own goal. TWU's Nick Perugini cleared the ball into the center of the box, where a Lethbridge defender went up to head the ball out of play. Instead of finding a safe area the ball found the top right corner of the Pronghorn net.

TWU now has a week off before heading to the University of Victoria for a match on Saturday, October 9. Match time is set for 2:15 pm. Lethbridge is now off to play the University of British Columbia tomorrow afternoon at Point Grey. Match time is set for 2:15 pm.

Match Notes: TWU outshot Lethbridge 20-6 and held the edge in corners at 8-2....TWU keeper Chris Cecil (Abbotsford, BC) made four saves to earn the shutout....Lethbridge keepers Keane Donaldson (Victoria, BC) and Marcel Galaszkiewicz made nine saves for the Pronghorns...
