TWU Spartans (5) at the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS SHUTDOWN HORNS
LETHBRIDGE, Alberta - From the opening kick-off the Trinity Western University Spartans dominated all facets of the game in a 5-0 shutout of the host University of Lethbridge Pronghorns.
“We had one of our most dominating performances today. Our defending was fantastic,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “One of our goals was to not give up any scoring opportunities and we knew that if we did our work defensively that we would create offense opportunities. It was an outstanding team performance today.”
Stefan Leslie (Surrey) opened the scoring quickly for the Spartans, connecting twice in the first twelve minutes. His second goal was a beauty as he connected on a diving header. An own goal, credited to Mustafa Demirci (Ankara, Turkey) put the Spartans up 3-0, 26 minutes in. Before the half was complete, Josh McCaig (Mission) cracked a shot to the top left corner to make the score at the half 4-0. The Spartans directed 16 shots towards the Horns net.
Justin Cordick (Anmore) finished the scoring at the 56th minute, slipping a shot on a breakaway past the Horns goaltender. In the end the Spartans out shot the Horns 29-4 and if it had not been for some exceptional diving saves by Marcel Galaskiewicz, the Spartans victory could have been more lopsided.
TWU’s Tyler DeJong (Langley) and Kris Alexander (North Vancouver) combined to earn the shut out win for the Spartans.
With the loss the Horns drop to 1-8-2, while the Spartans improve to 7-3-1. The Spartans are currently in second place in Canada West with 22 points. TWU has an outside chance of catching first place Alberta, who currently has 27 points. The Spartans face the University of Calgary Sunday afternoon at 2:00 p.m. Next week is the final league matches when TWU will host the University of Saskatchewan on Friday and the University of Alberta on Saturday.
In their last meeting the Spartans fell 1-0 to the Dinos. Since the Sept. 15 match the Spartans have a record of 6-1-1 overall and 5-1-1 in Canada West league play.
