SPARTANS TIE TOPPED RANKED GOLDEN BEARS
1-1 tie gives TWU two ties against number 1 ranked Alberta

LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University and the University of Alberta’s men’s soccer match saw two of the better teams in Canada finishing off the Canada West season with a 1-1 draw Saturday night at TWU’s Spartan Field.

The first half had each squad generating quality chances, but neither team was able to find the back of the net.

In the second half TWU’s Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Oregon) opened the scoring in the 56th minute. Pogue took a pass across the box from Josip Maras (Burnaby, B.C.) and hammered the ball into the left hand side of the Golden Bears net.

Alberta’s Eddy Sidra (Edmonton, Alta.) got the equalizer 13 minutes later. Teammate Daniel Nielsen (Calgary, Alta.) took the ball down the right side and into the penalty area, where he hit a square ball across the box to Sidra. Sidra then one-timed the ball into the leftside of the Spartans net.

TWU’s Tyler DeJong (Langley, B.C.) and Alberta’s Steven Reid (Calgary, Alta.) both played the full 90 in net for their respective clubs.

The two teams will meet up again next week at the Canada West Championships in Edmonton, Alta. The season series is currently all square as the teams tied 2-2 in their previous meeting in Edmonton. The other semi-final will see the University of British Columbia battle the University of Calgary. The championships begin on Saturday, November 4.

The match-ups are the same as last years Championships at TWU, where the Spartans beat the Golden Bears 1-0 and the Thunderbirds beat the Dinos 1-0.
