LATE GOAL GIVE BEAVERS EDGE OVER SPARTANS
-Oregon State rallies after TWU ties match in second half

CORVALLIS, Ore.
– The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team gave the hometown Oregon State University everything that they could handle in the 2007 pre-season opener Friday night at the Beavers Paul Lorenz Field. The Spartans fell 3-2 but they showed that they are a talented squad with a lot of options that can be thrown at an opponent.

“We gave the fans of Oregon State one of the more entertaining games that they will probably see in a long time,” said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. “I was incredibly proud of the way our guys played. The level of passion, heart and pride that they displayed was outstanding.”

Mason Webb (Bellingham, Wash.) scored the first goal in tonight’s game with the assist from Brett Gardner (Portland, Ore.) in the 15th minute. Mason’s brother Nick Webb (Bellingham, Wash.) scored the Beavers second goal with the assist from junior Josh Cameron (Gresham, Ore.) in the 27th minute.

Sophomore Justin Woodward (Corvallis, Ore.) created the Beavers third goal to regain the lead and take the win in the 59th minute. His goal was off a deflected corner kick and was unassisted. “We’re going to try and not give up another 2-0 lead,” Coach Taylor commented. “But we came back and got the win.”

“I thought that Trinity Western brought a whole different look to our preseason play,” Coach Dana Taylor said. This was the Beavers fifth time playing Trinity Western. The Beavers took their second win against the Spartans tonight; the other three games resulted in a tie. “Trinity brought in some big guys in the second half that gave us some trouble, but we made adjustments. All and all we saw some good performances from guys.”

The Oregon State men’s team held Trinity Western scoreless until Wesley Barrett (Richmond, B.C.) scored in the 53th minute off of Nick Perugini’s (Montreal, Que.) assist. The Spartans scored again in the second half with an unassisted goal by Jake Jorgensen (Bellingham, Wash.) in the 57th minute of the game. “Jake’s goal was spectacular,” said Alderson. “I was great to see to of our young guys get goals against a quality opponent.”

“We almost scored three times in the first seven minutes. But were unlucky and not feeling too good when we went into the half down two,” added Alderson. “With us being down two goals we were forced to open it up a lot in the second half, which made the match unbelievably dynamic.”

The Trinity Western Spartans outshot the Oregon State Beavers 16-13, with 10 saves from Oregon State’s keeper Packy Deenihan (Pleasanton, Cali.). Deenihan’s defense was key in controlling the Spartans aggressive offense throughout the game. Trinity Western had two saves from Spartans keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.) and three from Andrew Kowan (Richmond, B.C.) respectively.

The Spartans now head to Spokane, Wash. where they will match-up against the Gonzaga University Bulldogs on Sun. Aug. 26. Match time is set for 2 p.m. The Oregon State men’s soccer team heads to Michigan to take on Michigan State and Wright State Aug. 31st through Sep. 2nd.

TWU opens Canada West conference play the weekend of Sept. 7-8 when they will host the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Alberta respectively. Match times on both nights is scheduled for a 7:15 p.m. kick-off.
