FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
LAST MINUTE GOAL LIFTS VIKES OVER SPARTANS
VICTORIA - Fifth-year mid-fielder Julio Moreno (Montreal, PQ) found the back of the net in the 89th minute, as the University of Victoria men's soccer team slipped past the Trinity Western University Spartans 2-1 in non-conference play at Centennial Stadium.
“We played spectacular in the first 20 minutes, but were not able to convert on our chances,” said TWU hjead coach Al Alderson. “It was a very entertaining end to end game and it was really good to see us creating the number of chances that we are.”
Moreno hammered home a rebound off a Vikes free kick, clinching the UVic victory over the defending Canada West champions and 2006 CIS silver medalists.
"It is a tremendous result leading into the last week of the pre-season," said Victoria head coach Bruce Wilson. "Trinity [Western] is a great team, and it's an excellent result for us."
The Vikes opened the scoring, at the close of the first half, on a goal by junior striker Cole McFarlane (Calgary, AB). McFarlane, an All-Canadian last season, slipped the ball into the bottom left corner after a beautiful touch-pass from forward Peter Richmond (4th, Victoria, BC). Time of the goal was 43 minutes.
Trinity Western would pocket the equalizer off a corner kick at the 66-minute mark. Rookie Wesley Barrett (Richmond, BC) managed to chip the ball through congestion in front of the goalmouth. Three-time All-Canadian Nick Perugini (5th, Montreal) picked up the assist.
Shots on goal were 8-5, in favour of the Spartans. Victoria attempted 14 shots, including freshman Alex Redpath's (Terrace, BC) strike off the cross-bar in the 83rd minute.
Canada West conference play begins next weekend as the Spartans host the University of Saskatchewan on Friday, September 7 and the University of Alberta on Saturday, September 8. Both matches have a 7:15 p.m. kick-off at TWU Spartan Field.
