TWU Spartans (4) vs. the University of Alberta Golden Bears (0)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS IMPRESSIVE IN VICTORY
-Kekec ties TWU record with three goals in first half.

LANGLEY, British Columbia
– The #2 ranked Trinity Western University men’s soccer team welcomed back forward Adrian Kekec (4th year, Burnaby, B.C.) with a bang in Saturday night’s match against the #1 ranked University of Alberta. After playing overseas for most of the summer the Spartans single season goal scoring record holder made the most of his first start scoring three times in the first half to lead the hometown Spartans to an impressive 4-0 win over the Golden Bears.

The match-up did not only feature the two top ranked teams in the CIS, but it was a rematch of last years CIS national championship match, which the Golden Bears won 1-0. But unlike the national championship match, tonight was not a good night for the visitors from Edmonton. TWU dominated the play from beginning to end out-shooting Alberta 22-4 and 13-2 in shots on goal. If not for some fine saves by Golden Bear keepers Jaswinder Gill (1st year, Edmonton) and Steve Reid (2nd year, Calgary) the score could have been more in the favour of the Spartans.

“We are always trying to be more focused with how we are playing and about playing to our potential and not about the level that the other teams are play at,” said TWU head Coach Al Alderson. “That being said I did make note of last year’s championship and I told the guys ‘Gentlemen we need to erase that’. So we definitely wanted to come out and make a statement about who we are.”

Kekec opened the scoring in the 18th minute and then added two more in the 43rd and 45th minute to give the Spartans a 3-0 lead heading into the break.

TWU’s Mustafa Demirci (4th year, Ankara, Turkey) scored his first goal of Canada West play in the 77th minute to make it a four goal victory for the Spartans.

The win moves the Spartans to 2-0-0, while the loss drops the Golden Bears to 0-2-0. TWU keeper Andrew Fink (1st year, Burnaby, B.C.) made two saves to earn his second shut-out win of the season.

Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Victoria on Saturday, September 15 then at the University of British Columbia on Sunday, September 16.

Match Notes: TWU is 7-6-4 lifetime against Alberta...the Spartans had the edge in corner kicks at 10-1...each team committed 11 fouls...With today’s three goals Kekec ties his career best and remains tied with Paul Ballard (Alum ’06) and Brian Scrivens (Alum 04) for the TWU single game goal scoring record.
