TOP RANKED SPARTANS STILL PERFECT

LETHBRIDGE, Alta. - Forward Nathan Pogue (3rd year, Seaside, Ore.) scored twice and added an assist as the number one ranked Trinity Western University men's soccer team extended their winning streak to five and remained perfect in Canada West (5-0) with a hard fought 3-2 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (1-3-1) Saturday afternoon in Lethbridge, Alta.

"We knew that whenever we came into Lethbridge it would be a battle. I'm real proud of our guys with a gutsy second half effort and that they were able to find a way to win," said Alderson.

The Horns opened the scoring in the first half on a Jaycee Neufeld (Saskatoon) blast from just inside the Trinity Western 18 yard box. Playing with the wind at their back the Horns held tough the remainder of the first half, limiting the chances of the TWU squad and entered the break with a 1-0 score.

With the wind, the Spartans came out blazing in the second half, immediately applying pressure to a stunned Horns squad. The Spartans' Pogue deposited the ball into the back of the Horns net amidst a scramble in the first minute to knot the score at one.

TWU continued to apply pressure, which gave the Spartans a penalty kick in the 50th minute.

Horns' keeper Keane Donaldson (Victoria) made an outstanding save on TWU's Adrian Kekec (4th year, forward, Burnaby, B.C.).

However, Donaldson was unable to corral the ball which resulted in a number of TWU and Lethbridge players, including Donaldson, attempting to retrieve the ball. The ensuing scramble resulted in Donaldaon being accidentally hit by one of the Horns defenders.

The collision resulted in serious injury to Donaldson who needed to be taken off the field in an ambulance.

Two minutes later, Keane's replacement, Marcel Galaszkiewicz (Calgary), attempted to challenge a long pass from Spartans substitute Bruno Napoleao (3rd year, defender, Edmonton), which made it through Galaszkiewicz leaving the ball open for Pogue to direct into the net for his second of the game, giving the Spartans their first lead of the game.

The Horns rallied to tie the score in the 64th minute as Neufeld made a beautiful one touch pass to an open Ryan Conn (Calgary), who beat the Spartans Andrew Fink (1st year, Burnaby, B.C.) to the far side.

With 86 minutes gone in the game, Spartans' Pogue continued his strong half with a great pass to a wide open and streaking Justin Cordick (5th year, midfielder, Anmore, B.C.). Cordick went in one on one with Galaszkiewicz and beat him to the low right corner. "Nathan and Justin both had strong second half's for us today," commented Alderson.

The Horns pushed forward late but could not tie the score before the final whistle.

Next up for the Spartans is the University of Calgary Dinos on Sunday afternoon. Match time in Calgary is set for 2 p.m. MST.

Match Notes: The Spartans outshot the Horns 24-15 and 11-4 on net...TWU had five corner kicks to Lethbridge's two...Lethbridge keepers made eight saves, while TWU's Fink made two...
