SPARTANS FALL FOR FIRST TIME IN 07
-Valley opponents UCFV drops TWU
ABBOTSFORD, British Columbia - Rivalries develop when the result of contests between opponents is always in doubt whenever the two teams meet. Up until today a match between the Trinity Western University men's soccer team and University College of the Fraser Valley was not a match between rivals. Today the unranked Cascades (3-4-0) handed the number one ranked Spartans a 3-2 loss to give TWU its first blemish of the season record, 6-1-0.
Let the rivalry begin.
The Cascades Nick Thiessen (Abbotsford, B.C.) scored a spectacular header, off a Simon Crocker (Abbotsford, B.C.) corner, in the dying seconds of extra time to give the home team the upset victory.
"The difference between the top in Canada West and everybody else is negligible. Fraser Valley played with a lot of hunger and even when they were down they kept battling," said TWU head coach Al Alderson.
TWU opened the scoring in the 12th minute when Nick Perugini (5th year, midfield, Montreal, Que.) scored his first goal of the season. TWU took a 2 - 0 lead during the final minute of the first half when Goran Vitic (2nd year, midfield, Surrey, B.C.) put the ball past Cascade keeper Estevan Garcia (Abbotsford, B.C.).
"Once we got up we lost our desire to keep playing hard. When it was tied we started playing with urgency. We were able to create a number of good opportunities we just didn't get enough of our shots on target to really challenge their keeper," added Alderson.
Fraser Valley came out strong in the second half when Spencer Schmidt (Abbotsford, B.C.) hammered his fifth goal of the season from 40 feet on a free kick in the second minute of the half. Less than five minutes later, the Cascades tied the game when Ethan Collins (Chilliwack, B.C.) scored his first of the season.
Both teams exchanged excellent scoring opportunities for the next 40 minutes but with no goals to be had. TWU goalkeeper Andrew Fink (1st year, Burnaby, B.C.) made a brilliant diving save on a Cascade header in the 75th minutes while TWU hit the crossbar in 85th minute. "Andrew Fink made some brilliant saves today. He was our player of the match," said Alderson.
The Cascades Estevan Garcia made two saves for the win, while the Spartans Andrew Fink made five saves in the loss.
The two teams will square off again Saturday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.
Match Notes: The Spartans are now 2-1 lifetime against the Cascades. The two previous meetings were both 3-0 wins for TWU...UCFV outshot TWU 12-8...the Cascades also had the edge in corners 8-2...
