SPARTANS BACK ON TRACK
-TWU avenges Fridays loss to Fraser Valley

LANGLEY, British Columbia - David Rowse (3rd year, forward, St. Alberta, Alta.) scored his first two goals as a Spartan to lead the number one ranked Trinity Western University men's soccer team to a thrilling 3-1 victory over the University College of the Fraser Valley on a cold and rainy night at TWU's Spartan Field. The win avenges the 7-1-1 Spartans lone loss of the season, when TWU fell 3-2 to the 3-5-0 Cascades Friday night in Abbotsford, B.C.

"Yesterday as a team, every field player was quite flat, while Fraser Valley was very hungry. Today at home our job was to get hungry again, which resulted in us having a number of scoring chances," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "So it was a very good comeback performance for us."

The first half remained scoreless despite a number of quality chances from both squads.

Rowse, who was the lone sub at the half, made the most of his minutes as he quickly put the Spartan up 1-0 in the 47th minute. Adrian Kekec (4th year, forward, Burnaby, B.C.) set up the goal when UCFV keeper Estevan Garcia (Abbotsford, B.C.) made a great stop but was unable to hold on to Kekec's hard shot. Rowse quickly jumped on the rebounded and directed it into the Cascades net.

"David is a natural goal scorer. We have been limiting his minutes as he has needed to work his way into game shape. We used him at the end of yesterday's match and he performed well, so tonight we decided to put him in a little earlier," said Alderson. "It's great to see that he is getting fit enough to go out and make a contribution, because he was definitely trouble for the Fraser Valley defenders when he was out there."

Fraser Valley's Jonathan Craig (Pitt Meadows, B.C.) scored a beautiful header to tie the match in the 60th minute. Craig took Ethan Collins (Chilliwack, B.C.) cross from the far left and neatly headed it past TWU's Andrew Fink (1st year, keeper, Burnaby, B.C.) and into the right side of the Spartans net.

Rowse's second goal was similar to his first. This time it was TWU forward Nathan Pogue (3rd year, Seaside, Ore.) who had the hard shot. Rowse grabbed the rebound, and in a crowd, corralled it into the Cascades net to give TWU the 2-1 lead with ten minutes remaining.

Bruno Napoleao (3rd year, defender, Edmonton) got the insurance marker with his first goal of the season in the 83rd minute. Kekec fed Napoleao off of the short corner. Then from the left side Napoleao bent a perfect shot into the top right corner of the Cascades net to make the final 3-1. "We switched Bruno to the outside midfield today, not a common spot for him, but we needed to increase our ability to move the ball around so we moved him up," said Alderson. "He allowed us to change our point of attack and he was very dangerous for us all game long and the highlight was him scoring a lovely goal to ice the game."

The Spartans have a commanding lead in the Canada West standings. TWU sits in first place with 21 points. In second is Alberta with 11 points followed by UBC, Victoria and Lethbridge with 10 points each. The Cascades are in sixth spot with nine points.

Next up for the Spartans is a non-conference match with Simon Fraser on Tues. Oct. 2. Game time on Burnaby Mountain is set for 7:30 p.m. Their next Canada West Conference match is on Sat. Oct. 13 at the University of Alberta.

Match Notes: TWU outshot UCFV 30-14...the thirty shots is the second most in a CIS match for the Spartans. The record is 37 which they set two years ago in a 4-1 win against Saskatchewan on Sept. 22, 2005...Kekec led the Spartans with nine shots, which is the most by a TWU player in a Canada West conference match. Todd Anderson and Diaz Kambere held the previous record which they set against Saskatchewan in the Sept. 22, 2005 match...despite the poor weather conditions over 500 fans watched tonight's match...
