SPARTANS GET SCHOOL RECORD TENTH WIN
-Coach Alderson gets 150th career win
LANGLEY, British Columbia - Canada West goal scoring leader Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.), with 10 goals, scored the game winner while teammate Adrian Kekec (Burnaby, B.C.) scored his seventh of the season to lead the Trinity Western University men's soccer team to a solid 2-0 win over the visiting University of Calgary Dinos Friday night at TWU. The win moves the first place Spartans to 10-2-1, while the loss drops the last place Dinos to 4-7-2.
The 10 wins is a Canada West Conference best for the Trinity Western University men's soccer program. The Spartans achieved nine wins twice before - once in 2003 and again in 2004.
Pogue opened the scoring in the ninth minute. The third year forward took advantage of a mishandled ball by Calgary keeper JP Crecenzi. The Ball said out to the TWU forward who was standing alone out side the top of the box. Pogue then volleyed the ball over Crecenzi and into the top of the Calgary net.
Kekec made it 2-0 for the fourth ranked Spartans in the 31st minute. The fourth year forward took a pass from Pogue and went in alone on Crecenzi. As the keeper came charging out, Kekec neatly played the ball off to his right and turned the corner to slot the ball into the open Dino net.
The second half had the two teams exchanging possessions, with neither team seriously threatening the opponents net to make the final 2-0 for TWU.
Crecenzi made six saves for the Dinos, while the Spartans rookie keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.) made three saves in recording his fourth shut-out of the season.
The Spartans finish of the Canada West regular season Saturday night when they host the University of Lethbridge. Match time is set for 7 p.m. Canada West play-offs begin Friday, November 2 at TWU. The Dinos will finish off their West Coast road trip tomorrow afternoon in Abbotsford, B.C. against the University College of the Fraser Valley.
