TWU Spartans (3) vs. the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS FINISH WITH CANADA WEST RECORD
-TWU heads to post season on two game streak

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The first placed Trinity Western University men's soccer team will head into the post season on a two game winning streak after a 3-1 victory over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns Saturday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

The win moves the fourth ranked Spartans to 11-2-1, while the loss drops the Pronghorns to 4-8-2. With the win the Spartans finish with 34 points, which betters the previous Canada West record of 32 points, which was set by the 9-0-5 Alberta Golden Bears last season. The Spartans are the first team in Canada West history to win 11 matches in Canada West conference play.

Prior to tonight's game the Spartans had clinched top spot in Canada West and the Pronghorns had been eliminated from making the post season. As a result TWU Head Coach Al Alderson chose to sit the majority of his starters and give his bench valuable playing time. "We have a very deep and strong squad and even though some of our bench doesn't get a lot of playing time, they have been major contributors to our success so far this season. So it's nice to get them all a chance to get in a game and be sharp as we enter the play-offs," said Alderson.

Lethbridge opened the scoring in the sixth minute on a beautifully executed free kick. The ball went high into the Spartans box where Jaycee Neufeld (Saskatoon) went high and headed the ball back across the Spartans goal mouth to team-mate Michael O'Brien (Calgary). O'Brien went high and headed the ball into the top of the TWU net to make it 1-0 for Lethbridge.

The Spartans tied the game in the 38th minute on a penalty kick by Brendan Campbell (Surrey, B.C.). The Spartans were awarded the PK after TWU's David Rowse (St. Albert, Alta.) was taken down from behind when he was going towards the Lethbridge net.

Rowse got his goal in the 73rd minute when he was sent in alone by the Spartans Jason Flint (Abbotsford, B.C.).

Flint made the final 3-1 in the 83rd minute when he took a cross from Daniel Lowen (Langley, B.C.) and controlled the ball right in front of the net and neatly placed it in the Pronghorn net.

Kris Alexander (North Vancouver) made one save to pick up the win for the Spartans, while Keane Donaldson (Victoria) and Marcel Galaskiewicz (Calgary) split the duties for the Pronghorns in the loss.

Next up for the Spartans is the Canada West play-offs which start Friday, Nov. 2 at TWU. The Spartans will play the second game on Friday against the yet-to-be-determined fourth place finisher in Canada West. Match time is set for 6:30 p.m. at TWU's Spartan Field.

Match Notes: TWU finished with 12 shots on goal to Lethbridge's three...the Spartans previous season's best was 29 points, which was set in 2004 with a 9-1-2 record...
