TWU Spartans (2) vs. the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (1) - OT

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS THREE-PEAT AS CANADA WEST CHAMPIONS

-Nathan Pogue named MVP

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The third ranked Trinity Western University men's soccer team is headed back to the CIS National Championships as the Canada West champs after an energized 2-1 overtime win over the ninth ranked University of British Columbia Thunderbirds Saturday night at TWU's Spartan Field. The Canada West gold medal is the third for the Spartans in as many years.

Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.) was named tournament MVP. The Canada West goal scoring leader scored four goals, including two game winners and added an assist in the Spartans two wins.

TWU's Adrian Kekec (Burnaby, B.C.) opened the scoring in the 22nd minute. The goal came off a free kick from TWU's Nick Perugini (Montreal). Perugini sent the ball to the far side of the UBC box to Pogue. Pogue took control and split two UBC defenders and put the ball off to Kekec on the right side of the penalty area. Kekec then hammered the ball past UBC's Srdjan Djekanovic (Vancouver) to give the home team a 1-0 lead.

UBC's Jorge Angel-Mira (New Westminster, B.C.) got the equalizer in the 37th minute. The Canada West rookie of the year took a through ball from teammate Michael Elliot and went in alone on TWU's keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.). Fink made and effort to come out and challenge Angel-Mira, but the speedy midfielder was able to get around the Spartans keeper and find the open net to tie the match at 1-1.

Through the remainder of regulation time the two teams traded quality chances which required both keepers to come up with game saving stops. TWU's Andrew Fink made seven saves in the win, while UBC's Djekanovic made six saves in the loss.

With both teams tied after regulation and as a result went into two 15 minute overtime periods. Pogue and the Spartans got the game winner early in the first overtime. Nathan Square-Briggs (Richmond, B.C.) sent a deep ball to Kekec. Kekec then broke down the left line and sent a cross to Pogue, who had made a perfect run towards the UBC net. Pogue met the ball at about eight yards out and sent the ball neatly into the Thunderbirds net.

Up one, the Spartans played a more defensive style for the remainder of the two overtime periods. The Thunderbirds had a number of chances but were unable to find the equalizer.

Both teams will now advance to the CIS National Championship Nov. 8 - 11 at UBC. TWU as the Canada West No. 1 will open the championships at 11 a.m. on Thursday against Ontario No. 2, while UBC as Canada West No. 2 will open the championships at 7 p.m. on Thursday against Quebec No. 1.

Match Notes: The last time the two teams met in the play-offs was for the CW gold medal in 2005 at TWU. The Spartans also won that match by a 2-1 score...Pogue now has 14 goals on the season. He is three of the TWU record of 17, which Kekec set last season.
