2007 CIS men's soccer championship: Consolation Final
Spartans beat Saint Mary's to take consolation final

LANGLEY, B.C. (CIS) - Fifth year forward Jason Flint (Abbotsford, B.C.) scored the lone goal, while rookie keeper Andrew Fink turned away five stops to give the Trinity Western University Spartans a 1-0 win over the Saint Mary's University Huskies in the consolation championships at the CIS men's soccer championship Saturday afternoon.

Flint scored the lone goal in 20th minute. Spartan forward Adrian Kekec (Burnaby, B.C.) started the play when he broke in on the St. Mary's back line and forced the defenders in tight. Kekec then sent the ball out to the right to a charging Flint. Flint went in alone on the Huskies net and hammered the ball past keeper Matt Hogg (Bedford, N.S.) and into the top right corner of the Saint Mary's net.

"It took us a while to get into it, but we played really well and were able to create a lot of scoring chances, we just weren't able to finish them," said TWU Head Coach Al Alderson. "I think that because we were playing so much better then Saint Mary's that we started to slow down in the second half and because we didn't finish them when we could have they got interested and forced Andrew Fink to make a number of great saves."

The Spartans held a significant advantage over the Huskies in the first half. St. Mary's failed to get a shot on net, while TWU forced St. Mary's keeper Matt Hogg to make five saves to keep the match close.

Saint Mary's turned things around in the second half and forced TWU's Fink to make a number of outstanding saves, the most dangerous shot coming in the 87th minute off of the foot of striker Brian Little (Halifax). Little took a flick on off of a throw in and found himself just outside the crease on the right side of the net. Little sent a hard shot towards the TWU net, but Fink was able to get a hand on the ball and keep Saint Mary's off of the scoresheet.

The Huskies held the edge in play in the second half as the finished with an 8-5 shot advantage in the half, with most of the attempts coming in the final 20 minutes of the match.

The Spartans held the edge in total shots as they outshot the Huskies 15 to nine.

Because of weather conditions the match was played at TWU's Spartan Field in Langley, B.C.
