TWU Spartans (2) vs. the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS SLIDE PAST T-BIRDS

LANGLEY, British Columbia - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team used two first half goals to come from behind to defeat the visiting University of British Columbia 2-1 in their friendly Friday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.

The Thunderbirds opened the scoring in the 30th minute. UBC forward Conor Cregg-Guinan (Vancouver) sent a cross from the right side of the park to a leaping Scott Barling (Surrey, B.C.). The Thunderbird midfielder headed the ball into the lower right corner of the Spartans net to put the visitors from Point Grey up 1-0.

The Spartans tied the match two minutes later. TWU's All-Canadian defender Paul Hamilton (Calgary) sent a pretty cross to the top of the penalty area from just over half. The ball found the head of a leaping David Rowse (St. Albert, Alta.) who deflected the ball brilliantly into the lower right corner of the UBC net.

Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.) got the winner in the 37th minute. Nathan Square-Briggs (Richmond, B.C.) sent a perfect through ball up the middle of the park to a sprinting Pogue. The Canada West goal scoring leader went in alone and slid the ball past the T-Birds keeper and into the right side of the UBC net to give TWU the 2-1 lead.

In the second half both teams had quality chances, but neither was able to find the back of the net.

TWU had the edge in shots on goal at 4-3, while each team had four corner kicks.

Next up for the Spartans is at the University of Victoria for the annual Spring Cup Mar. 29-30.
TWU's next home game is their annual match with the Vancouver Whitecaps USL team on Wednesday, April 2 at 7 p.m. at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus.
