SPARTANS EARN SPLIT AT SPRING CUP
VICTORIA - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team rebounded from Saturday's 2-1 shoot-out loss to the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds to drop the University of Victoria Vikes 4-1 in Sunday's consolation match at the University of Victoria's Spring Cup.
"Today we played a quality match from start to finish. Our team came out incredibly sharp and we continued to get better as the game went on," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "I was very pleased with today's outcome as it was some of our prettier soccer of the Spring.
The Spartans opened the scoring in the 40th minute with Nathan Square-Briggs tallied the only marker of the first half. Square-Briggs got a lucky bounce when his shot deflected off a Vikes defender and past an out-stretched Dan Kilpatrick.
After Vikes third-year striker Cole McFarlane tied the game at the start of the second half, Trinity Western scored three unanswered goals to capture the victory. Mustafa Demirci, Nathan Pogue, and Paul Hamilton all scored in succession for the visitors, with Game MVP honours going to Nathan Pogue.
The Whitecaps Development team defeated the UBC Thunderbirds 3-0 in the Championship final with Simon Thomas earning shutout.
The UBC Thunderbirds prevailed over TWU in Saturday's match-up, needing penalty kicks to triumph over the Spartans 2-1 (4-2 PKs). A UBC goal in the 3rd minute of play, stood as the game's only score until Trinity Western tied the match in the final minutes. Spartans striker James Farenhurst necessitated the shootout, finding the back of the net on a header in the 87th minute of play. T-birds midfielder Colin Jones scored for the Thunderbirds, on a mid-range lofted shot to the right side of the net.
"We didn't start well and neither team was playing well in the early stages of the match," said Alderson. "It was tough being down early but we got better as the game went on. I was glad to see our guys battle back after giving up the early goal. Unfortunately with the shootout someone has to be lucky and someone has to be unlucky."
Next up for the Spartans is the Vancouver Whitecaps in their annual friendly. Kick-off on Wednesday, April 02, 2008 is set for 7 p.m. at TWU.
