TWU Spartans (2) at the Oregon State University Beavers (4)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS FALL TO BEAVERS IN FINAL MATCH OF SEASON
Corvallis, Ore. - Despite a strong second half the Trinity Western University men's soccer team could not overcome a poor start as the Spartans fell 4-2 to NCAA Div. I Oregon State University Saturday evening in Corvallis, Oregon.
"They had lots of energy and were incredibly sharp to start, while we were the opposite. We could not have played much worse in the first half, so I knew if we could correct some things we would be much better in the second half" said TWU head coach Al Alderson. "It was incredibly exciting second half as both teams upped the intensity. It matched them and I'm sure the guys would have liked had the first half back with the way that we finished."
The Spartans came out slow, while the Beavers came out playing strong and aggressive and were rewarded with a 2-0 lead at the end of the first half.
TWU came out much stronger to start the second half. The Spartans Goran Vitic (Surrey, B.C.) made it a one goal match when he muscled a goal in the 49th minute. Unfortunately for the Spartans a defensive breakdown five minutes later allowed the Beavers to regain the two goal margin.
Midway through the half TWU forward Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.) was taken down in the penalty area and the Spartans were awarded the penalty kick. TWU defender Brendan Campbell (Cloverdale, B.C.), in his final game as a Spartan, notched the PK to make it a one goal game with TWU trailing 3-2.
With the Spartans pressing, Oregon was able to take advantage as they scored late to make the final 4-2 for the home team.
Tonight's match was the final match of the season for the 2007-08 Spartans.
TWU will begin training camp for the 2008-09 season this coming August. The Spartans will be looking for their fourth straight Canada West title.
