TWU Spartans (5) vs. the Simon Fraser University Clan (1)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS SHOCK SIMON FRASER

LANGLEY, British Columbia - Trinity Western University forward Nathan Pogue (4th year, Seaside, Ore.) led the three-time defending Canada West champion Spartans to a convincing 5-1 victory over the 2007 NAIA Final Four Clan Wednesday night at TWU's Langley, B.C. campus. The defending Canada West goal scoring champion scored twice and added an assist as TWU overcame an early 1-0 deficit to score five unanswered goals to give SFU's new head coach Alan Koch and the rest of the NAIA 5th ranked Clan a less than hospitable welcome to the 2008 season.

The win moves the Spartans to 2-1-0 in pre-season play, while the loss drops the Clan to 0-1-0. The loss is significant for Simon Fraser as it counts towards their overall NAIA standings.

The Clan looked good to start the match. Three minutes in they took their first run at the Spartan defenders. SFU's Justin Carvery (Surrey, B.C.) blistered a shot from just inside the top of the box that rang off of the TWU cross bar. The ball ricocheted off of the back of the Spartans keeper Andrew Fink (2nd year, Burnaby, B.C.) and off to the left along the TWU goal line. Before Fink could coral the loose ball the Clans Sang Yoon Hwang (Seoul, South Korea) knocked it into the bottom right corner of the TWU net to give the visitors an early 1-0 lead.

Less than five minutes later Pogue got his first goal of the night when he was sent in alone with a perfect through ball from midfielder Patrick Kelly (5th year, Cochrane, Alta.). SFU keeper Thomas Lindley (Seabright, N.S.) was able to get a piece of Pogue's shot, but not enough to stop it from going into the top corner of the Clan net.

Three minutes later midfielder Goran Vitic (3rd year, Surrey, B.C.) was set up by Pogue down the left hand side of the pitch. Vitic went in alone and knocked the ball past Lindley to give the Spartans the lead 2-1.

Forward Shawn Parkes (2nd year, Delta, B.C.) made it 3-1 for the Spartans in the 24th minute. Forward Garrett Traversy (1st year, Delta, B.C.) set Parkes up when he went up the right side of the park and curled a pass past the outside SFU defender to find Parkes at the top of the penalty area. Parkes one-timed the pass into the left side of the Clan net to make it 3-1 for TWU.

Just before the half, 42nd minute, Pogue got his second of the night. TWU defender Paul Hamilton (3rd year, Calgary) sent a ball through the entire SFU midfield and backline to find Pogue charging toward the Clans' net. Going in alone Pogue gave Lindley no chance as he slotted the ball into the lower left corner of the net.

The second half was more spirited then the first. Even with their increased intensity the Clan were unable to get any quality chances on the Spartans. Fortune looked to turn the SFU way midway through the half when a minor incident in the 68th minute resulted in TWU's Jake Jorgenson (Bellingham, Wash.) being red carded. But even with the man advantage for the final 22 minutes the Clan were not able to get another shot past Fink.

The Spartans finished of the scoring in the 88th minute. Looking to kill the clock TWU's Jordan Hart (Bellingham, Wash.) took the ball into the right corner of the SFU end. The Clans' defense seem to relax as Hart passed the ball to forward David Rowse (St. Albert, Alta.), who was crossing behind toward the end line. In open space Rowse found teammate Daniel Lowen (Langley, B.C.) in the middle of the SFU box. Lowen headed the ball toward the Clan net. It looked like Lindley had the ball but it squirted through his hands and rolled across the line to make the final 5-1 for TWU.

TWU keeper Andrew Fink, a Canada West second team all-star, made five saves to earn the victory, while SFU's Thomas Lindley made two saves in the loss. Lindley, a third team NAIA all-American, allowed only seven goals over the entire 2007 season and finished with a 0.38 goals against average.

The Spartans now head south to the United States for two matches against NCAA Div. I schools. They will battle the Oregon State University Beavers in Corvallis, Ore. on Fri. Aug. 22 and then head to Spokane, Wash. to take on the Gonzaga University Bulldogs on Sun. Aug. 24.

Match Notes: SFU outshot the TWU 11-10...each team had seven shots in the first half...the two teams are now .500 lifetime at 3-3-3...the Spartans were 0-1-1 against the Clan last season, tying 0-0 on Aug. 20 and losing 4-3 on Oct. 2...
