TWU Spartans (3) at the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS SECOND STRAIGHT SHUT-OUT WIN
LETHBRIDGE, Alberta - The Trinity Western University men's soccer team made it two straight in southern Alberta with a 3-0 win over the University of Lethbridge Pronghorns on a blustery Sunday afternoon in Lethbridge, Alta. The Spartans forward Daniel Lowen (2nd year, Langley, B.C.) led the way with two goals to help the TWU improve to 5-2-2, while dropping Lethbridge to 1-8-1.
"It was a very good weekend for us and we are very happy to be coming away with six points," commented TWU head coach Al Alderson. "Once again our backline and Andrew Kowan had very solid games for us. Andrew made some fine stops and our defenders were able to handle the long balls and the pressure in the second half to keep Lethbridge off the scoreboard."
The Spartans opened the scoring only six minutes into the contest, when forward Adrian Kekec's (4th year, Burnaby, B.C.) crack from just inside the penalty area hit the top right corner of the Pronghorn net to put TWU up 1-0.
The best chance in the first half for the Horns came moments later when Greg Remjin (4th year, Cranford, Alta.) was sent in alone on the Spartan net, only to be turned away by a great sliding save from keeper Andrew Kowan (2nd year, Richmond, B.C.)
In the 42nd minute of the first half, the Spartans doubled their lead when Lowen's shot from in close was blocked by a defender but squeaked through Horns keeper Colin Pattison's (2nd year, Calgary) legs on the ricochet.
Early in the second half, the Horns had a great chance to cut into the Trinity Western lead, but Mike O'Brien's (4th year, Calgary) header just missed as it went off the cross bar and out of play.
Off a set piece, the Horns had another chance to hit the score sheet but Marcus Karpati (5th year, Victoria) was turned away by a diving Kowan.
Following the Horns outstanding chances, the Spartans had an opportunity to extend the lead to three. But Pattison came off the line to make a sliding save on rushing TWU forward Jordan Hart (3rd year, Bellingham, Wash.).
In the 66th minute a missed back pass by Pronghorn Ivan Rajcic (1st year, Lethbridge) allowed the Spartans to take a three goal lead, as Kekec intercepted the pass and sprung Lowen for his second of the game.
Kowan turned away any further chances for the Horns to earn the clean sheet. His best save of the game came off a Remjin free kick, diving to his right and deflecting the ball away from harm.
Kowan made seven saves, with six in the second half, to record the win for the Spartans, while Patterson made three saves in the loss for the Pronghorns.
Next up for TWU is a non-conference match with the Simon Fraser University Clan. Match time in Burnaby, B.C. is scheduled for 7 p.m.
In Canada West action the Spartans are on the road again next weekend facing the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds. The Horns are off until after the Thanksgiving weekend, when they will conclude the home portion of their Canada West schedule, hosting the Victoria Vikes and UBC Thunderbirds.
Match Notes: The Spartans have now gone over 318 minutes (3.5 games) without giving up a goal...TWU had a 16-13 edge in shots...with Lethbridge having a six to five lead in corner kicks... the Spartans had six shots on goal, while the Pronghorns had seven...
