TWU Spartans (1) at the University of Victoria Vikes (3)

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

SPARTANS CONVERSION PROBLEMS GIVE VIKES WIN

VICTORIA - The Trinity Western University men's soccer missed some quality chances early on and as result they fell 3-1 to the University of Victoria Vikes Saturday afternoon in Victoria. The loss drops the Spartans to 5-3-2, while the win moves the No. 4 ranked Vikes to 7-2-1 and keeps them within striking distance of the No. 1 ranked and first place UBC Thunderbirds at 7-0-3.

"We come away unhappy because we created some great scoring opportunities early on, but we were unable to convert on them, which was the story of the game," said TWU head coach Al Alderson. Hopefully tomorrow we will be able to continue to create and be able to convert on the opportunities."

Nine minutes into the match the Spartans had taken four shots on the Vikes net and had two corner kicks, but were unable to find the back of the Victoria net.

The Vikes got on the scoreboard with their first attempt on the Spartans' net. Victoria midfielder Kyle Langseth (Detroit) took advantage of a Jeffrey Hagen cross off of a set piece and headed the ball past TWU keeper Andrew Kowan (2nd year, Richmond, B.C.) for the lone goal of a very physical and closely contested first half of play. The Vikes finished the half with 15 fouls, while the Spartans committed 10.

TWU defender Cardin Davis (1st year, Salt Spring Island, B.C.) nearly tied the game in the 16th minute, but not for a solid save by Victoria keeper Dan Kilpatrick (Winnipeg).

For the remainder of the half the two teams exchanged opportunities, but neither was able to find the net as the Vikes went into the break leading 1-0.

Victoria forward Jordie Oberg (Victoria) got the game winner when he found some space in the box and headed home his third of the year in the 55th minute to put the Vikes up 2-0.

The two goal margin was short lived as just two minutes later the Spartans would cut the lead back down to one as they capitalized on a breakdown by the Vikes defenders. After numerous cracks on net, forward Daniel Lowen (2nd year, Langley, B.C.) would use his chest to guide home a loose ball past Kilpatrick.

Langseth would put the game on ice in the 86th minute again using his head to find the back of the net, this time courtesy of a well-played cross from substitute Miguel Romeo (Buenos Aires, Arg).

The Spartans' Kowan made nine saves in the loss, while the Vikes' Kilpatrick turned aside four shots for the victory.

The Vikes will look to keep the quest for home field in the post season going when they take on the University of the Fraser Valley Cascades on Sunday afternoon, while the Spartans will travel to Vancouver to take on the University of British Columbia Thunderbirds. Kick-off for both matches is set for 2:15 p.m.

Match Notes: The Vikes out shot TWU 22-to-16 and had the edge in shots on goal at 12 to five...Victoria had 23 fouls, while TWU had 18...The Spartans played the final three minutes of regulation down a player after TWU defender Patrick Kelly (5th year, Cochrane, Atla.) received a second yellow card...
