Nov. 6, 2008

OTTAWA (CIS) - The Trinity Western Spartans and Laval Rouge et Or will meet in the semi-final round at the 2008 CIS men's soccer championship following wins over Wilfrid Laurier and tournament host Carleton, respectively, in the last two opening-day duels Thursday afternoon at Raven's Field.

Canada West finalist Trinity Western edged the Golden Hawks 1-0 in a defensive battle in the third quarter-final match, while Quebec finalist Laval exploded for four unanswered second-half goals to upset the hometown Ravens 4-1 in front of a large partisan crowd in the final game of the first round.

The Spartans and Rouge et Or, who will face off in Saturday's late semi-final at 4:30 p.m., have followed very similar paths since joining CIS in 2001 and 2000, respectively. Both are appearing at the national tourney for the fourth straight year, TWU having a bronze medal (2005), a silver (2006) and a fifth-place finish to show for, while Laval tied for seventh three years ago, finished fourth in 2006 and dropped a 2-1 decision to UBC in the 2007 championship match.

The young programs have met once at the CIS championship in the past, with the Spartans winning 1-0 in the first round in 2005.

OUA champion Laurier, making its first appearance at the Nationals since claiming back-to-back titles in 2001 and 2002, and host Carleton, returning to the tournament for the first time since tying for seventh in 2005, move to the consolation round and will square off Friday at 1:30 p.m.

GAME RECAP: TRINITY WESTERN 1, LAURIER 0 (by Carleton sports information)

A close-range goal from Adrian Kekec of Burnaby, B.C., secured the Trinity Western Spartans a spot in the semi-finals after defeating the Wilfrid Laurier Golden Hawks 1-0 in the third quarterfinal match.

Kekec, a fifth-year forward, got on the end of a deflection to lift the ball past Laurier keeper, Yousef El-Abbar of Kitchener, Ont., to score the game-winning goal in the 75th minute.

In a tightly-contested match the play opened up early as both teams attacked relentlessly to create dangerous chances at both ends. However, El-Abbar in goal for Laurier and Andrew Kowan for the Spartans were able to make several saves keeping clean sheets for their teams, entering the halftime level at 0-0.

Following the Trinity Western goal, Wilfrid Laurier mounted countless attacks in the Spartans end. A steadfast Spartan defense helped to preserve the shutout on their way to a narrow win over the Golden Hawks.

El-Abbar had 2 saves in the match for Wilfrid Laurier while Andrew Kowan recorded 7 saves in his shutout performance.
