CLAN SQUEAK BY SPARTANS

LANGLEY, British Columbia – When the Trinity Western University men’s soccer team and the Simon Fraser University Clan square-off in their annual non-conference match-up it is typically a hard fought spirited affair. Tonight’s match was no different as the Clan came away with a 1-0 victory in match that in addition to some quality soccer saw 36 fouls committed and 10 cards handed out.

The lone goal came four minutes into the start of the second half from the head of SFU’s Helge Newmann (Oslo, Norwary). Newmann was in the right spot at the right time as he took advantage of a rebound off of a beautiful save by TWU keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.). Fink had stopped a point blank shot by SFU’s Colin Steckmann (Burnaby, B.C.), but the rebound went high into the air and before a TWU defender could clear the ball Newmann headed the ball into the top corner of the Spartans net.

The Spartans had the advantage six minutes later when SFU’s Max Baessato (Rome, Italy) was sent off with a red card, but despite the extra attacker TWU was unable to get the equalizer. Their man advantage lasted until the 84th minute when TWU defender Rhys Volkenant (Surrey, B.C.) received his second yellow card of the match.

The Clan had a significant advantage in the overall play as they out-shot the Spartans 23-13. Despite the overall shot advantage the Spartans still managed to get the same number of shots on net as the Clan with six each.

TWU forward Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.) led the Spartans with four total shots, while Farhad Abdulgani (Oslo, Norway) led the Clan with seven total shots, three of which were on net.

TWU’s Fink made six saves in the loss, while SFU keeper Hide Ozawa (Victoria) made six saves to earn the shut-out win.

The match, which was played at Willoughby Park in Langley, B.C., was a counter for SFU (4-1-0) and a non-conference match for TWU (0-5-0).

The Spartans kick off the Canada West season next Fri., Sept. 12 and Sat. Sept. 13 when they will travel to the prairies to take on the University of Saskatchewan and the University of Alberta. TWU home opener is on Fri. Sept. 18 when they will host the University of Calgary followed by the University of Lethbridge on Sat. Sept. 19.

This fall Trinity Western will be the proud hosts of the 2009 CIS men's soccer championships. With their host position the Spartans’ men’s team will set a TWU school record with five straight CIS men's soccer championship appearances. The Spartans have won three national championship medals (silver in 2008 and 2006 and bronze in 2005, they were fifth in 2007), and have finished as Canada West regular season champions in 2003, 2004, and 2007. They also won three straight Canada West Championships in 2005, 2006, and 2007, before finishing with silver in 2008.
