MEN’S SOCCER (CANADA WEST)
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER 12, 2009
TWU SPARTANS (3) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF SASKATCHEWAN HUSKIES (1)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS KICK OF 2009 WITH ROAD WIN
SASKATOON – The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team opened the Canada West season by scoring three unanswered goals, with two in the final five minutes of the second half, to come from behind for a 3-1 victory over the University of Saskatchewan Huskies Saturday afternoon at Potash Corp Park in Saskatoon.
“We probably stole the milk off of the porch today. We didn’t play well in the first half and probably were a little better in the second half,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “Credit to Saskatchewan they are a very ‘tricky’ team with lots of depth and lots of talent. They were well balanced and kept us off balance for most of the game. But we found a way to get through it and we found a way to rise above it so overall I’m very pleased with the result but we need to improve our performance.”
It wasn’t until the second half that either team got on the board. Huskie forward Myles Shedden opened the scoring in the 55th minute, after a cross from Jerson Barandica- Hamilton, for the lone goal on the Spartans keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.).
Trinity Western then went on to score three unanswered goals to finish out the match.
The Spartans defender Jason Wiens (Coaldale, Alta.) tied the game at one just eight minutes, 63rd, after the Shedden goal. Forward Shawn Parkes (Delta, B.C.) got the game winner for Trinity Western when he scored the go-ahead in the 85th minute after his shot deflected off Huskie keeper Mark Diakiw’s hands over his head and trickled into the net. TWU forward David Rowse (St. Albert, Alta.) secured the opening victory with a goal in injury time.
With the win the Spartans open the season 1-0, while the Huskies fall to 0-1.
TWU’s Fink made six saves to earn the win, while Saskatchewan’s Mark Diakiw made three saves in the loss.
Saskatchewan remains at home to host the UBC Thunderbirds tomorrow afternoon, while Trinity Western travels to Edmonton to take on the University of Alberta Golden Bears. Both matches are scheduled for 2:15 p.m. kick-offs.
Match Notes: The Huskies outshot the Spartans 11 to seven in total shots and eight to six in shots on goal…Saskatchewan also had the edge in corner kicks at seven to two…TWU is 12-4-3 lifetime against Saskatchewan…they split the season series last year at 1-1 with each team winning as the visitor…
