NO. 3 TWU SPARTANS (1) AT THE NO. 8 UNIVERSITY OF ALBERTA GOLDEN BEARS (0)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
POGUE & FINK = WIN
LANGLEY, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team used an early goal by forward Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore) and some second half saves by keeper Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.) to secure a 1-0 win over the University of Alberta Golden Bears Friday night at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves the No. 3 Spartans to 7-1-3, while the loss drops the No. 8 Bears to 5-2-4 and creates separation between first place TWU and third place Alberta. A win by Alberta would dropped TWU to third and have put the Golden Bears ahead of the Spartans.
Pogue got the lone game winning goal in the fifth minute of play. The goal was set up by the fine passing of defender Paul Hamilton (Calgary) and forward Shawn Parkes (Delta, B.C.) who worked the ball across the park to find Pogue open on the right side of the field. Pogue got the ball in the penalty area and went in hard on the right side. Then, from just outside the six, he blasted the ball past Alberta’s Jaswinder Gill (Edmonton) to score the lone goal of the match. The goal is Pogues’ eighth in Canada West play, which puts him in top spot in Canada West. He is also in top spot in points with ten.
TWU had the edge in shots and play, especially in the second half after the Golden Bears were a man down after two yellow cards sent Brett Colvin off in the 44th minute.
But despite having the advantage TWU was unable to get an insurance goal. Midfielder Jason Wiens (Coaldale, Alta.) almost had it in the 65th minute, but his shot rang hard off the cross bar and out of play. Alberta responded immediately and found midfielder Milan Timotijevic (Calgary) open in the TWU box. Timotijevic sent a hard shoot low to the left side of the TWU net, where a diving Fink was able to preserve the one goal lead.
Timotijevic was at it again in the 74th minute when he had a point blank shot on the TWU net. But once again Fink was there to make the stop.
TWU forward David Rowse had another chance to get the Spartans their second goal in the 90th minute, but his shot from the middle of the box sailed high and to the right to go out of play.
Fink made two saves to earn the win for the Spartans, while Jaswinder Gill made three saves in the loss. It is Fink’s second shut-out of the season.
Next up for the Spartans are the Saskatchewan Huskies. Match time Saturday at TWU is set for 7:15 p.m. PDT, while the Golden Bears will now head to Vancouver to take on the UBC Thunderbirds.
Match Notes: Goal’s may become a big item for the Spartans by the end of the season. If TWU remains tied with UBC for top spot it will go to overall goal deference to determine the top team and hosting rights as TWU and UBC have split their two games and have the same goal difference in those matches… TWU is currently plus 10, while UBC is plus seven…TWU outshot Alberta 13-5, but the Bears had a six to two edge in corner kicks…tonight’s game was broadcast live on the web on Spartan TV…
