GOAL BARRAGE GIVES SPARTANS WIN

LANGLEY, British Columbia – Led by defender Jason Wiens’ (Coaldale, Alta) two goals the No. 3 Trinity Western University men’s soccer team scored their third most goals in a game to defeat the visiting University of Saskatchewan Huskies 5-1 Saturday night at TWU’s Langley, B.C. campus. The win moves the first place Spartans to 8-1-3, while the loss drops the seventh place Huskies to 2-8-2.

The game started out looking like it would be a tightly contested match from start to finish. The frantic pace produced quality runs into each team’s defensive third of the park. But the final outcome was not indicative of the battle between the two team’s front lines.

The Spartans Nathan Pogue (Seaside, Ore.) got his conference leading ninth goal of the season to open the scoring in the 17th minute. Less than four minutes later the Huskies knotted it up at 1-1 on a header from Austin Boryski (Saskatoon).

For the next twenty minutes the Huskies continued to have dangerous runs into the Spartans end of the park. Most notable was Saskatchewan’s Josh Northey (Saskatoon) who found himself open for shots on a number of occasions.

Fortunately for TWU they were able to weather the storm. Then in the 41st minute Wiens rifled a shot from just outside the top of the box and into the top of the Saskatchewan net to give TWU a 2-1 lead going into the half.

After leading in goals, but trailing in shots seven to four at the half the Spartans made some defensive adjustments which paid dividends in the final 45 minutes. TWU would outshoot the Huskies eight to one and outscore Saskatchewan 3-0 in the final frame to run away with the match 5-1.

TWU’s Liam McAllister (Vancouver) scored in the 62nd minute on a nicely place shot from outside the box to give the Spartans the 3-1 lead. Garrett Traversy (Delta, B.C.) scored in the 79th minute from the middle of the box to make it 4-1 and then in the 88th minute Wiens got his second of the night when he knocked in a rebound off of a Daniel Lowewn (Langley, B.C.) shot to make the final 5-1.

TWU’s Andrew Kowan (Richmond, B.C.) made two saves to earn the win, while Mark Diakiw (Saskatoon) made four saves in the Huskies loss.

Next up for the Spartans is the final weekend of Canada West play. TWU will look to sew up first place when they travel to Alberta to play the University of Lethbridge and the University of Calgary next Saturday and Sunday afternoon. While Saskatchewan will finish up the season with a home and home with the University of Alberta.

Match Notes: The Spartans’ five goals in a match have only been bettered in their history on two separate occasions: Aug. 30, 2003 against Carlton University and Oct. 18, 2003 against Lethbridge…TWU’s Nathan Pogue leads Canada West in points with 12, points per game at one, goals with nine and goals per game at 0.75…TWU leads Canada West in goals with 24 and goals per game at two…
