TWU SPARTANS (1) AT THE UNIVERSITY OF LETHBRIDGE PRONGHORNS (2)
FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
SPARTANS FALL ON ROAD TO HORNS
LETHBRIDGE, Alta. – The University of Lethbridge Pronghorns carried out a huge upset Saturday afternoon against the CIS second ranked and conference leading Trinity Western University Spartans. The Spartans loss now means that TWU needs to win tomorrow against Calgary and UBC lose to Lethbridge for the Spartans to claim top spot in Canada West and host the CW Final Four.
Both teams had to battle through the elements as Southern Alberta’s infamous wind reared its ugly head. It was also a tale of two halves as the Horns dominated much of the first half before the Spartans took over for much of the second. It took strong defending and goal keeping but the Horns managed to hang on to create a last place over first place stunner.
The Horns carried the majority of the play in the first half, outshooting the Spartans 16-7. The games first great chance went to the Horns at the 6 minute mark of the game when defender Steven Brown (Calgary) launched a shot from 30 yards away that rang off the crossbar. Seven minutes later another Horns defender Cristian Lorenzoni (Calgary) blasted another shot from distance that missed the far post by about a yard.
Trinity Western had their first opportunity of the half at the 16 minute mark as James Farenhorst (Langley, B.C.) floated a shot from outside the penalty area that was punched over the crossbar by Horns goalkeeper Jordan Campbell (Fort Macleod, Alta.) at the last second.
The Horns finally opened the scoring in the 25th minute courtesy the foot of Matt Medoruma (Lethbridge, Alta.). Morgan Brownjohn (Osoyoos, B.C.) used some nifty dribbling along the sideline before finding Medoruma in the penalty area who then curled a beautiful shot off the post and in.
The Spartans evened the game up in the 31st minute off of a bending 40 yard free kick from the foot of Ioannis Tsoulouhas (Bellingham, Wash.). Campbell made a desperation stab to no avail.
Lethbridge would go into halftime with the lead when Medoruma was hauled down in the penalty area by a Spartan defender. Horns forward Greg Remjin (Cranford, Alta.) would make no mistake on the penalty kick as he blasted it past Andrew Kowan (Richmond, B.C.).
The Spartans had a tremendous opportunity to level the game in the 58th minute as Tsoulouhas came down on Campbell and fired a close range shot that was deflected by the Horns keeper over the net.
Trinity Western had another golden opportunity to level the game four minutes later, as David Rowse (St. Albert, Alta.) came bearing down on Campbell but hit the crossbar.
The final gasp for Trinity West occurred in the 88th minute as the Spartans drew a free kick near the top of the penalty area but the shot wrecked on the Horns wall.
The Horns second victory of the season improves their record to 2-7-4 while the Spartans drop to 8-2-3.
The Spartans will look to rebound tomorrow when they head north to take on the University of Calgary Dinos while the Spartans hope that the Horns will pull off another upset tomorrow as they host the now first place UBC Thunderbirds. Kickoff for the Horns-Thunderbirds clash is set for 2:00pm at University of Lethbridge Community Stadium.
