SPARTANS AND DINOS SCORELESS TO CONCLUDE LEAGUE PLAY
CALGARY – The University of Calgary Dinos ended their season on a bittersweet note on Sunday afternoon, moving from seventh to fifth in Canada West after a scoreless draw with the No. 2 Trinity Western University Spartans, but missing the postseason nonetheless. The Spartans claim second place in Canada West and will head to the playoffs next weekend and, as host, the subsequent CIS championships.
“The boys played exceptionally well in the second half and had a number of quality chances and were unlucky not to come away with three points,” said TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “Overall I’m pleased with the effort and our team’s response under difficult situation.”
Neither team was able to find the score-sheet on another windy Sunday afternoon in the foothills, despite both teams generating substantial offensive pressure. Calgary had six shots on goal, with midfielder Brian Delaney notching four, while the Spartans made Calgary goaltender J.P. Crescenzi stop 11 of their 19 total shots.
The Spartans were led by forward David Rowse (St. Albert, Alta.), who put three shots on goal, and Ioannis Tsoulouhas (Bellingham, Wash.), who despite registering only one shot on goal was a consistent threat throughout the match for the Langley-based club. Goaltender Andrew Fink (Burnaby, B.C.) made six saves in the shutout.
The Dinos close their season out at 4-7-3, and claim fifth in the conference after placing second to last in seventh in 2008.
After losing their grip on first place in Canada West with a shocking 2-1 loss to the Lethbridge Pronghorns on Saturday, the Spartans claim second with the tie. The UBC T-Birds take the top spot by earning four points on the weekend and the subsequent home-field advantage in the Canada West playoffs.
The Spartans will take on the third place Victoria Vikes next Friday in one Canada West semifinal, while the Birds will host the Alberta Golden Bears in front of their home crowd immediately following. The final will go on Saturday, November 7th, at Thunderbird Park in Vancouver.
