SPARTANS SPOIL TIMBERWOLVES HOME OPENER

PRINCE GEORGE, British Columbia – The Trinity Western University men’s soccer team improved to 4-0-1 with a difficult 2-1 win over the University of Northern British Columbia Saturday afternoon at the North Cariboo Senior Soccer League (NCSSL) Fields in Prince George, B.C.

“I am extremely happy with the result but not with our performance. We need to play consistently on the road, in difficult circumstances, against good opposition. UNBC were good today as they played to their strengths,” commented TWU head coach Pat Rohla. “I think that we need to take a strong positive from this game, in that although we weren’t at our best, we have players who are willing to step up and put the team on their shoulders.”

Second year midfielder Brayden Gant’s header in the 81st minute was the difference as the Spartans kept the Timberwolves winless at 0-5-0. Gant’s game winner came after he converted a cross from fifth year defender Brayden Volkenant.

Gant was also involved in the opening goal of the match when he found third year midfielder Mitchel Rohla in the centre of the penalty area. Rohla followed through by finding the back of the net, giving Trinity Western a 1-0 lead in the 15th minute.

“Our game winner was a brilliant critical moment play that we needed from our co-captain Brayden Gant. He was pure class again today as he does a lot of hard work for the team,” said Rohla.

The Timberwolves were able to tie the match nine minutes into the second half after the Spartans left the ball short and allowed a UNBC counter attack. Timberwolves midfielder Sourosh Amani was able to capitalize on a pass from Cheona Edzerza. Amani got past the Spartans defence and slipped the ball past TWU keeper Andrew Hicks to tie the match up at 1-1 in the 54th minute of play.

“After our opening goal we stopped doing the things that have given us some success and allowed UNBC some hope. I think that when we scored we forgot that our calling card must be hard work before anything else,” said Rohla.

TWU rookie Andrew Hicks, in his first Canada West start as a Spartan made one save and controlled his penalty area to earn the victory, while UNBC’s Mitch McFarlane kept the Timberwolves in the match with nine saves.

“Andrew Hicks looked very strong in the pipes, he had a good presence in the air and was very vocal,” added Rohla.

The two squads will meet again on Sunday afternoon for the second half of their double header weekend. Match time is set for 2:15 p.m. at the NCSSL fields.
